If Anything, Yesterday's Performance Should Dispell A Few Myths

21

MYTH VS FACT

1. Clemson needs to use the transfer portal. - Myth

Fact: Clemson has the required players to compete on the national stage. If I recall, 13 starters were out yesterday against a very good ND team.

2. Clemson needs better players. - Myth

Fact: I don't want to get ahead of myself just yet, but I believe that this team will earn a National Championship trophy before they graduate.

3. Clemson needs better coaches. - Myth

Fact: Clemson coaches just require more experience within the Clemson program under Dabo Swinney's leadership.

4. Clemson needs to exploit 18-year-old high school athletes with NIL offers. - Myth

Fact: Clemson already sponsors NIL programs, but they're mostly aimed at charitable organizations, and they tie in with the LIFE program. If you graduate with a degree from Clemson, there is no excuse or reason not to gain fruitful employment that compensates really well. However, if you have to bribe or buy a player with NIL deals, then they're not a good fit for the program. They actually become sort of a virus to the team in the locker room and on the field.

5. Clemson stinks this season. - Myth

Fact: Clemson nearly leads the nation in trips to the redzone, which proves that they have the capability to move the chains on offense and sustain drives. The Defense has more than proven itself to be a national contender as well. At the end of the day, numbers do not lie. The scoreboard doesn't always tell the whole story of the game, it merely provides the final result. Ball security derailed their season, and it had nothing to do with the coaches, transfer portal, NIL, or Tyler.

There is a Youtube video about the life of Chesty Puller which is well done. I watched it the other night and was surprised at some of the things they mentioned. Very interesting man, that Chesty.

I would counter with a couple of caviots. We need some OL help through better players from recruiting(some new faces did well Saturday) or the portal. Also, there is another side to having the 2nd most red zone trips (our points per trip was way down the list) - we are not scoring from outside the red zone.

We have plenty of talent on the Oline, thats not the issue***

ChestyPuller0311® Appreciate your esprit de corps, and if Clemson's team, coaches and fan base is satisfied with 5-4, all your facts are correct. IMHO some of your facts are correct and some of your myths have some factual merit. Great win yesterday! Go Tigers!

In the Marine Corps, your buddy is not only your classmate or fellow officer, but he is also the Marine under your command. If you don't prepare yourself to properly train him, lead him, and support him on the battlefield, then you're going to let him down. That is unforgivable in the Marine Corps. Chesty Puller

You obviously have your agenda and opinion but much of this can be refuted. Nothing wrong with using the portal. We'll most likely need to use it this season to pick up some defense experience and depth. We could use some more experienced coaches. I believe it was 13 players were out. Not starters. And perhaps some of those starters that were out may not have been starters anyway.

Fact: All teams have injuries, especially this time of year.

A lot of bluster

half-truths, I-ordered-the-code-red over confidence in self viewpoints. After one victory against what I thought was a soft team that didn't really have much for playmakers. Looking at Bama LSU yesterday, they've got athletes and playmakers we only dream about these days.

Totally agree with you on ND. I believe you discussed this last week. That's one reason I thought we'd win. ND tight end that was out was there playmaker. Yeah, wouldn't bet against Bama. Their qb is coming on.

This is absurd. One game doesn't prove anything. I'm not agreeing

1

with all of the "myths" but it's absurd to point to one game like that's all that matters.

We couldn't go toe-to-toe with Georgia and probably 5-6 other teams right now. And if best is the standard, then we aren't meeting that standard with this team.

While you are correct that one game doesn't define a season or even establish a team's identity. However, of the teams that may be able to beat Clemson this season pretty handily, none of them have used the transfer portal heavily and none of them have over the top NIL deals. They simply recruit great players. I believe FSU had quite a few transfer portal players and their NIL agreements aren't the nation's best. They beat Clemson by a single score in overtime and most of the game, Clemson dominated the trenches and stopped them on the ground to a record 22 yards all game.

Colorado recruited 48 top recruits from the portal and they flat out stink. Texas A&M has the largest NIL offerings of the nation, but how is that working out for them? If you recall, Clemson won the National Title against an Alabama team that had (8) or (9) 5* recruits on the roster. Clemson had (2) or (3) 5* recruits on the roster. It's all in how you develop the players. During that run, Clemson was lucky to have a handful of 3* recruits that developed and matured quickly during their tenure at Clemson. This is the exact reason why Clemson was the first to go 15-0 and win the National Title. This current team is developing quickly, but injuries and turnover margins have to improve. However, I have a feeling that Clemson will be unstoppable next season and the season after provided that they execute ball security.

I really hope this is a turning point and gets us back on track, but nothing you

1

Nov 5, 2023, 8:58 AM

Said is a fact

We had 285 yards of offense and 2 turnovers yesterday that doesn't win many games. It sure as sheet doesn't win a playoff game in this Era. The defense was exceptional and won that game, our offense deserved to lose.

I don't know if you watch any football other than Clemson football, but if you do you'll see all of the elite teams have better skill players than we do.

We're not first in red zone trips, we were 7th coming into this week and 125th in red zone efficiency. I talked to a former D1 coach this week who said it takes special players to score TDs lots of guys are good between the 20s. We're still looking for more special players.

I’ve been trying to stay 100% positive about yesterday’s game. It was a perfect day for football, an exciting win over Notre Dame, and my Dad’s first game back in the stadium since 2021 (he’s 80 and recovering from hip surgery).
I will have to object to your first point however because it was obvious our offense was falling apart at the end of the game.
Hats off to Mafa- he carried the team. The OL wasn’t bad, and Klubnik played better than his stats. The pick 6 wasn’t his fault- in and out of Collins’ hands. Many of the incompletions were good passes. We still need receivers to show up. We’ll wear Mafa out running him 35 times a game. Look at our offensive stats for the last five drives.
Again- I enjoyed this win as much as everyone else- but our offense (despite making improvements yesterday) is still in need of repair and a liability.

The big picture. In ten or so years, no one will be able to look at the schedule and remember if we played well or stunk up the field. They will just see a W or an L

Judge, I believe and until Coach Swinney gives real cause not to, then I will continue believing. I've long said that expectation exceeds everyone's reality. However, I watched every minute of the buildup to the 6-season run of excellence and beyond. I paid close attention to the details and there's a ton of parallels that compliment this team. The difference is that this team is young and still developing. Next season and the season after provided that ball security is much improved and injuries aren't a factor, Clemson will win it all.

Good grief, we beat a mediocre at best ND team. If all of those things were true we would be undefeated right now, and very well should be based on talent.

#3 and #5 don't necessarily follow . . .

Nov 6, 2023, 2:59 PM

Clemson is 5-4 in reality this year. The "on paper potential" based on stats is not what ultimately matters in regards to assessing a team. The numbers don't lie about those areas in isolation, but they certainly neither do they tell the most meaningful story in light of the ultimate point of a game. Clemson also is pretty high in turnover stats. It won't do to simply highlight the good stats, ignore the bad, and marginalize the bottom line (wins and losses). This puts the cart before the horse. The losses and the mistakes are related. To be able to have so many good stat points nad still have four losses in 9 games also tells something about a team.

Clemson may not "stink," as the remainder of the season will finish fleshing out the data. Could be 9-3. Could be 5-7 or somewhoere in between those two. However, the fact that such a talented team on paper took 9 games to really put something together that resembled their potential (or, maybe twice in 9 games if you count FSU), is not somthing you can brush under the rug, as if it doesn't reflect on coaching to any degree.
