2015 National Championship Offensive Depth Chart (long)

Jan 23, 2015, 1:24 PM

-QB
1st: Watson
2nd: Israel
3rd: Schuessler

No question here that Watson is the starter, but I believe that Israel will win the backup role in the spring. Bryant needs a RS year to become a more polished passer. Israel has the tools to be a very good QB. If anyone has watched this kid's tape, you know he can sling the rock.

-RB
1st: Gallman/Dye
2nd: Choice/Fuller

I think that Gallman has earned the right to be considered the starter going into next season. I listed them this way because we will not have a true starter next year unless someone has an unbelievable break out season (which I hope happens). Brooks isn't listed because I think his opportunity has passed and I wouldn't be surprised if he transfers or is moved to WR to add depth. Dye and Fuller are our two most promising backs and will prove to be able to pick up those tough short yards. Both have great vision and natural running ability.

-WR
1st: Williams/Scott/Peake
2nd: Thompson/Hopper/Cain
3rd: McCloud/Brooks

I don't think there is much question here who our starters are at this position, if Peake can start the season fully healthy. Hopper and McCloud can be switched if Hopper can't learn how to hang on to the football. Hopper has proven he can get open, but has a very hard time catching easy passes. Cain and McCloud will see a lot of playing time and will probably earn some starts. Brooks could be used as a 4th WR is some packages and be used to come in motion or audibled into the RB.

-TE
1st: Leggett
2nd: Richard
3rd: Seckinger/Smith

I think Leggett is in danger of losing this job if he can't learn to block quickly. Our TE's have a lot of potential, but haven't proven they can do anything yet. I think that Smith will be a very welcomed addition to the blocking game and will finally be that missing link we've needed to get the running game going. I'm very excited about Richard, I think he has all the right tools to be an All-American TE in the future.

-OL
1st: Battle/MacLain/Guillermo/Crowder/Hyatt
2nd: Hyatt/Falcinell/Norton/Hearn/Gore

The biggest question mark and the only thing holding us back is our OL. I have very high hopes for this group this year. If Hyatt can get up to 300 lbs. by the beginning of the season then I think the right side of our line can generate a huge push that we haven't seen in a long time. I'm not so sold on our left side, particularly our LG play. I don't think MacLain is very good, but we don't really have anyone else with experience that can play that position. I'm hoping that one of our young linemen can step up and play consistent enough to take over this starting position. Battle has all the tools to be a good LT, but if he wants to be great he really needs to add some weight before the start of the season. I think if we can get all our linemen at or above 300 lbs. then we will see a much improved running game.

This offense has all the talent and potential to be the best offense Clemson has ever seen! Who else can't wait for this season to begin?

I will be releasing the Defensive Depth Chart soon.

Mostly agree except for the WR positions

Jan 23, 2015, 1:29 PM

Scott, Williams and Peake all play a different WR position. Williams plays the "9" or boundary position and will be backed up mist likely by Thompson. Peake plays the field or "5" position like Jaron Brown and is most likely the test the middle of the field. Hopper played some here as well last year. Scott played the "2" position like Sammy did. This position is the one that runs the sweeps and gets the most screen passes. Basically this is the position we use for our most athletic WR as it does so many things. McCloud will play here behind Scott. Cain will play either the 5 or 9 positions

I think you read it wrong. I did at first. #1 is starters.***

The starting line up at WR is just like you said. I guess I wrote it a little confusing, but the 1st string is set up as so: 9/2/5 with Williams at the 9, Scott at the 2, and Peake at the 5. 2nd string is listed in the same order. 3rd string isn't listed by WR position, but I think that McCloud is a 2 and Brooks could be either a 9 or 5.

GOOOOTTTTCCCCHHHAAAA...That makes more sense now...

Yea I could see that...Possibly even a swap with Cain and McCloud as starters...I can RR3 even sliding over to take some reps out of the back field if we have a hard time getting a solid #2 back going...RR3 will be all over the d@mn place so we see...

And completely agree about TE...

Matter of fact, I would through Seckinger at the lead and let Richard & Leggett battle it out for #2...

completely agree with the Israel backup call. I think he's fantastic.I truly believe bryant will rs and then move to wr. He's an athlete and he could be great on wr passes, where we bring the wr in motion and he throws it down the field to another receiver. Thats just how i see it going, but i could be wrong.

Fruhmorgan could be a factor too at OL

Jan 23, 2015, 1:34 PM

Also I would expect Battle to play well this year. Its his senior year and in a sense his "contract" year. For whatever reason guys like him, Bowers, and Peters to name a few really struggled until it came time for them to get serious and earn their shot at the NFL.

Re: Where is Fruhmorgen?***

Jan 23, 2015, 1:42 PM

I'm hoping he can be our missing link at LG. I've read that he is really good at getting to the 2nd level with his blocks and has a really solid lower body. What lead to me leaving him out of the depth chart was that I do not think his upper body is strong enough to play college ball yet. I'm in class with a few players and I've heard that he really needs to get stronger before we see his true potential.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I hope you are wrong...

Jan 23, 2015, 1:53 PM

I really prefer (and I'm not the minority) that OL RS.. Hyatt included. As great as the OL class is, it is so hard for FR OL to be great out the gate. They all could all use a RS year. Not saying that happens, but that would be my preference. Considering our depth issues though, it's unlikely. However, I hope the starters on OL are: (this assumes RS'ing all FR OL)

LT Battle/Facinelli
LG Norton/Maclain
C Guillermo/Norton
RG Crowder/Morris
RT Gore/Hearn

And maybe Oliver Jones is healthy and ready to contribute. Again, a preference and not a prediction. I, however, do think that 1 or 2 of FR OL do avoid RS and not necessarily assuming it's going to be Hyatt. Watch out Green - he's probably the biggest of all of them now.

Re: I hope you are wrong...

Jan 23, 2015, 3:45 PM

Green will.be an inside player@ Oliver Jones will never dress out...
The true tackles are the following with everyone else being inside guys
Battle
Gore
Maverick
Hyatt
Fruhmorgen

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I disagree on Brooks

Jan 23, 2015, 7:32 PM

I feel like last year was going to be his breakout year before the foot injury. I think we'll be surprised at how deep the RB position will be this year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

All the people clamoring about Fruhmorgen

Jan 23, 2015, 1:47 PM

O linemen really need the RS year unless absolutely necessary. We have some depth at tackle, and Joe Gore was a starter when healthy this year. I doubt Jake is good enough at this point to surpass him. Let Gore play RT and he will be backed up by Maverick Morris O Jones or Falcinelli.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Taylor Hearn or Norton share snaps at LG with MacLain

Yeah, Hyatt isn't ready. Won't be ready.

Jan 23, 2015, 1:53 PM

It would be a train wreck to try to start him in the first quarter of the season. Maybe even the whole year.

He's bulked up some, but the accounts I've heard say that the weight has slowed him down a step. Might be the wrong kind of weight. We'll just have to wait and see. And that's before we even get to the mental part of the game that takes a step up in college ball.

I expect him to claim a starting spot in 2016, but let's not build up these crazy expectations for these true freshman OL.
