2 glaringly obvious observations about last night's game:
Aug 30, 2013, 7:58 AM
|
|
1) UNCheat is awful. Flat out awful. Renner isn't near the QB Heather Dimwit has made him out to be. 1) USuCk defense is out of shape. Don't know what's going on with their S&C, but they looked gassed before halftime. With our tempo, I see us hanging 50 on them with ease.
Leaving for God's county in a few hours....Go Tigers!!!

During the opener... I'll reserve judgement until the week before we go to Willy B... Lot of ball to be played between now and then.

I'm willing to bet complacency has crept into their mindset. They don't look like guys who have worked hard. They look like guys who think they can out-talent people by just showing up.
They're vulnerable on D.

UNC QB looked pretty good. I think he'll be the first qb taken in the draft. Don't let your hate for unc cloud your judgment.

The fact that he looked pretty average clouds my judgment. He missed some fairly easy throws. Is he a good QB? Yes, and he seems like he's a really good kid too. However, he will not be the 1st QB taken IMO.

Was it really that bad? It didn't strike me as something very unusual. The broadcast made a big deal out of Clowney, but I didn't notice anything that troubling, especially considering it was 90-something degrees. They only gave up 10 points.

Good luck in Athens. You'll need it. Your LB's don't look very good in space, nor do your corners.

Don't know about the other part. Defense overall looked pretty good to my amateur eyes.

Is that Clemson should easily score 50 on S. Carolina this year. Anything less would be an abject failure of the offense. I mean, sure...they've only scored 54 points on them total the last four years, but last night's game alone makes it obvious that this year will be quite different.

Too many unforced errors by Renner and their offense.
Aug 30, 2013, 8:07 AM

The fumbled punt was huge. SC's defense was gasping and ripe for another long exhausting drive.
The UNC play calling had little rhythm. Really surprised that Renner couldn't throw with consistent accuracy. A decent quarterback would have worn them out last night.

Renner is just awful. He looked like he's lost a step or two...didn't realize he has zero mobility. Playcalling was suspect. Why in the world would they try to run Renner on a QB draw? Awful.

Watch the tape. Their corners are horrible. Poor footwork, bad angles, etc. Also, look at their LB's....very poor angles, not wrapping up and they looked out of shape.
A "little" out of shape? They were gassed before halftime vs. a below avg. offense. That doesn't bode well for them vs. JawJaw.

teams' shape last night; thus, I imagine he'll start cracking the proverbial whip.
Most of what I saw I attributed to a season opener shakedown cruise in hot, muggy August weather, although I'm no Gamecock apologist. I suspect a better indicator will be their game next week against the Dawgs.

Here's the bottom line: No way they can get into shape in one week. Don't think JawJaw's coaches didn't notice what happened when UNCheat picked up their pace.

If "our tempo" worked against them, they wouldn't have won the past 4 years, and Tajh wouldn't have had his worst outings in those games. Heat and humidity play a huge part in any college opening game in the South, as the Tiger defense (and the UGA defense) will find out Saturday night. The benefit of HUNH schemes is the inability of the defense to sub their "special situation" players into the game. If the SC game was played in August, the Tigers definitely would stand a better chance against them.

Were you in ATL for the LSU game? Heat/humidity wasn't a factor then and we had them gassed.

they still only gave up 10 points and 300 yards, and they never allowed UNC to get the ball more than ~15 yards down the field.
On the other side of that though, Bryn Renner has no arm strength is very inaccurate if he has to move out of the pocket. Also, the UNC offense looked punchless without Gio Bernard, and i don't think that was necessarily due to SC defense. I think they just lack the explosiveness they had a year ago with him in there.

You missed a few things: No running game, no DL, no LB's, no corners and no kicking game.
Besides that, they looked pretty good (sarc).

Are you saying that UNC or USC didn't have those things?

If you are talking about SC you are crazy.
228 yards, 6ypc, and a 75yd homerun when they needed it = running game.
The DL might not have gotten sacks, but they held NC to 2.8ypc and pressured Renner enough to get him out of the pocket where he's not very efficient.
The young LBs didn't have a huge impact in either direction. I think that's probably a good sign for their first game since they didn't screw anything up.
Their freshman kicker looks 12 and his jersey said "Carolin" but he drilled every kick. The kickoff guy wasn't great, but meh.

So far it's a repeat of last year's opening game. Call it #### poor playing or sand-bagging. However, the team that shows up a Georgia will look night and day.
