What are some sports video clips / calls that you never get
Jun 1, 2022, 7:35 PM

tired of seeing? Some of my favorites, you guess what they are:
1) "He is moving like a tremendous MACHINE!"
2) "I don't believe, what I just SAW!"
3) "I shook up the World!"
4) "Little man makes another ENORMOUS play!"
5) "Maybe...Yes SIR!"
6) "A Win for the Ages."
7) "Cubs Win! Cubs Win! Cubs Win! HOOOOLY Cow!"
8) "They fought for every blade of grass!"
9) " Better than most. Better than most....BETTER THAN MOST!"
10) "This Impossible Dream has COME TRUE!"
If you miss Number 4, just turn in your Clemson fan card and exit the room quietly, please.

guesses. I guess you are all Too Cool for School. Answers are:
1) "He is moving like a tremendous MACHINE!": Secretariat-1973 Belmont Stakes, won by 31 lengths.
2) "I don't believe, what I just SAW!": Jack Buck's call of Kirk Gibson's Home Run in the 1st game of the 1988 World Series. Vin Scully also had a great call, but this one is my favorite.
3) "I shook up the World!": Cassius Clay, on his defeat of Sonny Liston in 1964 to become Champion.
4) "Little man makes another ENORMOUS play!": Hunter Renfrow breaks Bama hearts with one second left.
5) "Maybe...Yes SIR!" Jack Nicklaus birdies No. 17 on the way to an improbable victory in the 1986 Masters. Along the way, the BBC's Peter Allis also said memorably, "There may be some life left in the Old Bear Yet!". And, of Seve's ill fated iron shot into No. 15, "He's hooked that.. That's destined for the water!" I can't help it, if you hadn't guessed by now, that 1986 Masters is my FAVORITE sporting event of all time. And, Secretariat's mind blowing win at the Belmont is a close second.
6) "A Win for the Ages.": Jim Nance's call of Tiger Woods record shattering win in the 1997 Masters.
7) "Cubs Win! Cubs Win! Cubs Win! HOOOOLY Cow!": ANY Harry Caray call of ANY Cubs victory.
8) "They fought for every blade of grass!": Dabo Swinney after 2012 win over LSU, the "4th and 16" game.
9) " Better than most. Better than most....BETTER THAN MOST!": Call of Tiger Woods impossible birdie on the TPC Sawgrass Island Green No. 17, from across the world.
10) "This Impossible Dream has COME TRUE!": US Hockey Teams "Miracle on Ice" Olympic Gold Medal win in 1980.

I remember a conversation from a "SportCentury" special

on Secretariat and his Triple Crown run. It was awhile after it was all in the books. A jaded old sportswriter recalled Jack Nicklaus coming up to him, and saying "You were there, weren't you? When Secretariat won the Belmont that day?" Nicklaus went on, "I was at home, on my couch, watching it, alone. As Secretariat came down the stretch, I was standing up and clapping! I CRIED!" In a moment of divine inspiration, the sportswriter said, "Jack, don't you get it? All your life, in your sport, you have been chasing perfection. That day, at the Belmont, you SAW it!"
And he was right.

I never get tired of watching the highlights from the Boise St/Oklahoma Fiesta Bowl when BSU beat OU with the trick plays in overtime. One of the best bowl games ever!
Also, I love the clip from last NFL season where Hunter Renfrow picked up on the fake punt attempt and clocked the guy so hard - just short of the first down marker - that he fumbled the ball out of bounds.
And of course, the ultimate highlight, Watson to Renfrow for the win against Bama!

Vin Scully said something about a black man getting a standing ovation in the deep South. There really was a time that sports brought us all together behind our heroes.

one I got to see. His great early years were long before I was old enough to be a baseball fan at all. Like Willie Mays, Hammerin' Hank probably stayed a few years too long at the dance. But, we need to remember, those guys back then didn't make the huge money that pro baseball players make now. They were trying to milk their careers for every last dime they could get.
