Ever heard why the Spanish flu was called the Spanish flu

When, in fact, it never started in Spain? It's a really neat little bit of history. One the WHO actually tried not to repeat by calling it covid-19. Long story short, we were fighting WW1 at the time. Leaders in Europe and the US did not want to distract from the war effort. So they downplayed the virus. Spain, which remained neutral in WW1, therefore allowed the virus to be covered freely by their press, so naturally people thought the virus was worse there, and originated there. Media manipulation has been around a very, very long time.

The 1918 Spanish flu was actually most likely the American flu. The first known cases recorded were in a military mess hall in Kansas. Notice the 2009 Swine flu was blamed on the animal, and not called the Mexican flu.

Anyway.....doesn't matter. I don't blame China one bit for covid. Given what we know about the virus, it would be impossible to contain and stop in any country on Earth. Now when they find the virus lab that created it, then we can blame China. Given how secretive and the level of obstruction in finding the cave and/or bat that transmitted it to humans by China, I still think there's a decent likelihood it escaped a Chinese lab somewhere. It wasn't designed/manufactured, but it could have been studied and someone dropped something. It took them less than 3 months to track down the origin of the 2009 Swine Flu to 3 pig farms in Veracruz, Mexico.

Irony isn't lost that we have a BSL 3 virus infecting the entire planet now.

Maybe you could call it the Kansas flu to be more precise. Or even the Camp Funston flu if you really want to be specific. Or the Albert Gitchell flu? Can't get more specific than that.

It started in Kansas in a military mess hall feeding soldiers training for WW1. It soon spread to Europe and ravaged the allied armies and nations. In an effort not to detract from the war effort, the flu was downplayed in the press in allied countries (US/England/etc.). Spain, however, remained neutral during WW1. As a result, their press was free to cover the virus, which was actually the biggest story at the time, beyond the war even, especially in Spain who remained out of the war. As such, people thought the virus was worse in Spain, and the virus originated in Spain, and that was more than fine with the US and British leaders who were busy fighting WW1. So the name stuck, and it's inaccurate.

At the end of the day the "Spanish" flu killed many more people than WW1. It killed roughly six times as many Americans as died in WW1. More Americans fighting in WW1 died from the "Spanish" flu, than died fighting in the war.
