With the new kickoff rules, the risk/reward for running out a kickoff is pretty lopsided against doing so.

Most kickers can reach the end zone anyway and any fair catch inside the 25 is effectively also a touchback.

Not very many run-outs even reach the 25. I constantly point out "You just cost your team 7 yards" or ...3 yards" or worse!

I see a goodly number of fumbles occur due to the high-speed collisions and also muffs due to thinking about running before the ball is actually caught (fair catch means you can concentrate on catching it).

And then there's the seemingly inevitable block in the back that happens on just about every really big run-out, negating all that effort. Or worse, an injury.

Or you can take the touchback/fair-catch and start comfortably on the 25.

Obviously, a squib kick or short kick that bounces on the 15 needs to be played differently, but for "normal" kickoffs, I'd just as soon put the offense on the field at the 25 every time.

Same goes for punts, more or less. Fair catch...catch it...maybe get a penalty for interference. Take the touchback if it's there. Don't muff the punt because you're mentally planning your run...avoid holding and block-in-the-back penalties or injuries. Put the offense on the field.
