From DT to Americans..”The Only Thing You Have To Fear, Is Fear Itself!”

Wait..that great statement was from FDR, but both his & President Trump’s recent messages were meant to give the country courage & not to be overwhelmed by the unseeable.

Americans to Donald Trump - "We don't believe you!"
Oct 6, 2020, 4:58 PM

Given that almost 70% of voters don't believe him, he seems to be falling woefully short of that mark.
That means that a lot of Republicans don't believe him either.

Don't let the detractors get to you, Bill. You're good.

The "fear itself" quote is universally true, not situational. Anyone who argues with you about that is motivated by ideology, one we should actually fear except for the fact that it's already been defeated.

I think the problem here

Is that the "we have nothing to fear, but fear itself" line of reasoning only works when followed with a somber reasonable practical and sane conversation about how to actually handle the issues in front of us. There's a reason FDR didn't say just the single line, and then begin tweeting about how unfairly he was being treated. (I mean, beside the obvious lack of twitter in 1933).

That whole context thing can be a real drag when one begins to unfold it. Really crimps the snappy.

It's also in the context of how they both said it.

FDR said it to encourage an entire nation that had just faced economic collapse, not a global pandemic. It was more of a, "Hey, we're going to get through this." A message that might have been nice at the onset of this virus, not now.
Trump's message comes after he was hospitalized for his carelessness with the virus, and after receiving the best medical care possible but also ignoring the professional advice of doctors and his advisors, he claims that he beat it and we shouldn't be scared. All while the death toll is climbing.
Trying to draw a comparison between the two is absurd, an absurdity only overshadowed by anyone trying to defend a person drawing this absurd comparison to the two.

Well if the fear continues, then both the virus and ecomonic collapse will be upon us. What is the saying for both scurges to make Americans up beat? I know, "Follow Joe to the Basement".

I imagine FDR would respond to that comparison...

...with another line from that same speech:
"Only a foolish optimist can deny the dark realities of the moment."

Let's be honest...

Is anyone here who beats the Trump adoration drum NOT just regurgitating what they hear on Hannity? There's a reason they repeat the same catch phrases.

My recollection is that they always say they don't watch

They seem to have enough self-awareness to know what posting a clip of Hannity means (which is why they usually don't) yet it doesn't carry over to their own believing in what he's saying. It's that cognitive dissonance that's interesting.
but maybe I'm wrong or generalizing and this was just a coincidence.

Yet the talking points and phrases are always identical. The same phrases and talking points will be repeated on social media.
So I guess they know citing those people looks ridiculous, but they'll still repeat what they tell them to believe.

Good to see Trump being positive. I can only imagine being diagnosed with Covid at his age, knowing what it could do. And the fact that he’s kept going and serving our country despite knowing being in a high risk group is admirable.

history is more than knowing one-liners...it's understanding context and meaning and "the rest of the story".
When you read the next line from that speech you see:
"So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is...fear itself — nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance. In every dark hour of our national life a leadership of frankness and of vigor has met with that understanding and support of the people themselves which is essential to victory. And I am convinced that you will again give that support to leadership in these critical days."
In other words, for the country to overcome fear, we have to have frank and honest leadership. And that is exactly what we DON'T have now.
Juxtapose the above with President Trump telling Woodward that COVID is deadly but that he's downplaying the risk so as not to spook the public.
