Tiger Source: Thielen Smith Fired

by -

Tiger Source editor Mickey Plyler has confirmed with multiple sources that Clemson assistant football coach Thielen Smith will not be retained. Smith was in his sixth season with the Tigers and his eighth under head coach Tommy Bowden. Smith was coaching defensive line in 2003 but moved to whip linebackers and rovers this past season.

On Tuesday reports surfaced that Tigers' offensive coordinator Mike O'Cain and defensive coordinator John Lovett had also been fired by Bowden.

Sources indicate to Plyler that Smith will be the last current coach that will be let go.

“As far as replacements go this gives Tommy Bowden more versatility to move guys to either side of the ball,” said Plyler. “I can see a lot of different scenarios because Ron West and Jack Hines have coached on both sides of the ball.”
