Locker Room Dedicated in Honor of Dr. Larry Bowman

by -

CLEMSON ? Clemson football fans may notice a new name in Memorial Stadium this season: the visiting team locker room has been named after Clemson?s team orthopedic surgeon Dr. Larry Bowman.

Partners in the Anderson and Seneca offices of Bowman?s practice, Blue Ridge Orthopedics, along with Bowman?s friends, raised more than $250,000 for the WestZone initiative to have the locker room named in Bowman?s honor.

The name was unveiled in a ceremony that came as quite a shock to Bowman.

?It was a very humbling experience, for sure,? Bowman said. ?I?m living the dream, doing what I really love, and to be recognized for that is something that you don?t expect.?

Contributions were solicited secretly by the department of external affairs in Clemson?s athletic department, and many former players and coaches and Clemson fans made donations to honor the man who has been the team orthopedic surgeon for nearly 20 years.

Mike Timmerman, chief financial officer for Blue Ridge Orthopaedics, said it was a ?miracle? that the surprise dedication was kept a secret for more than six months.

Bowman credits his partners and staff for his success in helping so many Clemson athletes over the years.

?The real reason those athletes have done so well is because of the support of our staff, other doctors and our partners and all of their experience. We definitely have a team approach here,? he said. ?I get my name up there on that locker room, but it?s everyone else that makes me look good.?

Bowman said looking across the field on Saturdays and seeing his name on the wall inside Memorial Stadium is a bit surreal.

?It?s strange,? he said. ?Every time I look down the field, it has that shock value.?
