Football Standout Kirkland Returns To Clemson |
CLEMSON - Levon Kirkland is coming back to Clemson University. The former football star will help recruit performers for the classroom, not the football field.
Kirkland begins work Jan. 4. He will coordinate minority recruitment initiatives at Clemson and will provide one-on-one assistance to qualified minority applicants, assisting them in enrolling at the university and applying for financial aid when needed. Returning to Clemson "means everything to me," said Kirkland. "I am tremendously honored to be able to give something back to Clemson. "I have been around football for 20 years," Kirkland added. "It is time for something else, and this is a great opportunity for me." Clemson admissions director Robert Barkley is looking forward to working with Kirkland. "We are excited about having him join us and be a part of our minority recruitment efforts," Barkley said. "He can tell the Clemson story from a unique perspective. His enthusiasm and love for the university will have a very positive influence on prospective students." Kirkland, who earned a sociology degree from Clemson, was an outside linebacker for the Tigers football team from 1988 to 1991. The native of Lamar, S.C., was named a 1st team All-American in 1991, selected Most Valuable Player in the 1989 Mazda Gator Bowl and was the only underclassman to be a finalist for the 1990 Butkus Award. Kirkland's football career earned him high marks in the Clemson record books. He is ranked 8th in career sacks (19) and 10th in career tackles for a loss (40). In 1992, Kirkland was the Pittsburgh Steelers 2nd round draft pick. He finished his pro career with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2002.
