Twitter reacts to Clemson's latest Playoff ranking |
The College Football Playoff committee reevaluated the resumes Tuesday after a weekend without upsets among Playoff contenders and
dropped Clemson to No. 3 behind Miami.
The Hurricanes (10-0) fell behind by two touchdowns twice at home versus Virginia, but rallied to top the Cavaliers, 44-28. A week ago, committee chair Kirby Hocutt took a shot at the Hurricanes’ resume when it comes to road ranked wins, but the victory Saturday was a third in a row over a bowl-bound team. Syracuse falling to 4-7 didn’t help the Tigers (10-1) either, as well as NC State falling out of the new CFP Top 25 with a loss at Wake Forest. Another road win in Virginia Tech rejoined the top-25, however, at No. 25. Here’s a sampling of the reaction to the ACC rankings swap: Alabama Really doesn’t make any sense for the committee to switch up Miami/Clemson after this last week if they had Clemson ahead last week. Miami added a quality W over Virginia, and Clemson's loss to Cuse is now a loss to a team that gave up 120 points the last two weeks https://t.co/g6lkNO7ssr Kirby Hocutt said UM moved up because it strengthened resume last three weeks. "We see characteristics of a championship caliber team" So what I'm gathering is NC State and Syracuse losing hurt Clemson, gave Miami a bump. Did....Kirby really say that it was better Miami got down by 14 twice? Hocutt praises Miami's "poise and ability"in coming back to beat Virginia like it did, strengthened its resume just enough to take a slight edge over Clemson. Which is a little weird because they're kinda giving Miami credit for playing poorly for a while. I'm struggling to see why Miami's resume is so strong. Undefeated is great, but Oklahoma has better wins. Not close. My guesses for the committee moving UM Everything Kirby Hocutt says is gonna be bogus. Last week he said the main reason Clemson was ahead of Miami was because Canes hadn't beaten a winning team on the road...that's still true. Of intrigue toward the bottom of the new CFP ranking was South Carolina, which isn’t ranked in either the AP or Coaches polls, being ranked No. 24. There’s even some conspiracy theories to the Gamecocks’ first top 25 appearance: Clemson could pick up a win vs a ranked team (at game-time at least) this week at South Carolina. Not many would have seen that coming. Could serve as a resume builder. Guarantee #Gamecocks are 24th this week in the @CFBPlayoff Poll to give Clemson another win over a 'ranked' team Saturday night. #MadeForTV Schedule boost for Clemson with Virginia Tech and South Carolina in Top 25. Iowa State still outside Top 25, which doesn't help Oklahoma. Finally, some extra points on the CFP committee decisions: They have to sit in that room for two days and debate rankings that don’t matter. By now they’re just overthinking it and/or ready to get on with the show https://t.co/XxnmWa1FZQ Besides Miami and Clemson, the rest of the Top 12 CFP Rankings remained unchanged. The largest jump by any team was 2 spots. Alabama, Auburn and Georgia deserve to be where they are but that the committee keeps giving SEC as a whole benefit of the doubt means they really aren't paying attention ... it's not 2013 anymore. Miami at 2 strengthens ACC chances for two bids, if Clemson ends up 12-1 and Miami 11-1 after a competitive ACC title game. https://t.co/14n0ng23pr Nah. Doesn’t mean a thing. They’re the same at 12-1 whether they start ahead of Clemson or behind them. https://t.co/3nLUctXMLu
Miami (moves up)
Clemson
OK
Has to be considered a good sign for Miami and bad sign for Ohio State and other two loss teams.
As if winning a close game was better than blowing out UVA.
I'm reading a lot into this and as @GeorgeSchroeder points out that's a bad idea. https://t.co/AVf70PeHCT
1. Syracuse has done nothing but lose since they started doing rankings
2. Another win for UM over a bowl eligible team adds to their resume
