The College Football Playoff committee reevaluated the resumes Tuesday after a weekend without upsets among Playoff contenders and
dropped Clemson to No. 3 behind Miami.
The Hurricanes (10-0) fell behind by two touchdowns twice at home versus Virginia, but rallied to top the Cavaliers, 44-28. A week ago, committee chair Kirby Hocutt took a shot at the Hurricanes’ resume when it comes to road ranked wins, but the victory Saturday was a third in a row over a bowl-bound team. Syracuse falling to 4-7 didn’t help the Tigers (10-1) either, as well as NC State falling out of the new CFP Top 25 with a loss at Wake Forest. Another road win in Virginia Tech rejoined the top-25, however, at No. 25. Hocutt praises Miami's "poise and ability"in coming back to beat Virginia like it did, strengthened its resume just enough to take a slight edge over Clemson. Which is a little weird because they're kinda giving Miami credit for playing poorly for a while. I'm struggling to see why Miami's resume is so strong. Undefeated is great, but Oklahoma has better wins. Not close. My guesses for the committee moving UM Everything Kirby Hocutt says is gonna be bogus. Last week he said the main reason Clemson was ahead of Miami was because Canes hadn't beaten a winning team on the road...that's still true. Of intrigue toward the bottom of the new CFP ranking was South Carolina, which isn’t ranked in either the AP or Coaches polls, being ranked No. 24. There’s even some conspiracy theories to the Gamecocks’ first top 25 appearance: Clemson could pick up a win vs a ranked team (at game-time at least) this week at South Carolina. Not many would have seen that coming. Could serve as a resume builder. Every previous rankings release following a full slate of games (i.e. not the final rankings) has featured at least one team moving up 5 spots or more.
