Virginia Tech's coaching staff had been recruiting him for a long time and built a great relationship with him. He was offered by them when he was just a freshman.

His offers included Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Tennessee, and others. Clemson offered on 4/24/13 and he took part in the Dabo Swinney football camp in June 2012.

As a sophomore, he had 63 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, and 12 sacks.
