Clemson Slams Wofford, 7-1

by - Correspondent -

CLEMSON - Andy D'Alessio's grand slam home run highlighted a five-run seventh inning Wednesday night, sparking Clemson to a 7-1 victory over visiting Wofford.

The game was played before an announced crowd of .... at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

D'Alessio, benched at the start of the game because of a 1-for-20 slump, entered the lineup in the top of the seventh inning for defensive purposes. The switch paid great dividends in the bottom of the inning, when the big lefthanded hitter slammed a Charles Vartanian fastball over the fence to the right of the 370 sign in left-center.

It was D'Alessio's second grand slam of the season.

His blast made the seventh a five-run inning for the Tigers (27-16). One batter before D'Alessio's blast, Travis Storrer's bases-loaded single scored Taylor Harbin from third to give Clemson a 3-1 lead.

Before the seventh, however, the Tigers struggled against Wofford (14-30) lefty Chris Clark.

Clark, who entered the game with a 10.38 ERA, allowed just two runs - only one earned - in five innings against the Tigers. The soft-tossing lefthander held Clemson's lefthanded batters to just 1-for-10 at the plate while he was in the game.

But Wofford could do little with the Clemson pitching staff.

P.J. Zocchi started and pitched the first three innings, allowing the only Terrier run. Chris Howard, Jeff Hahn and Daniel Moskos combined to shut out Wofford over the final six frames. Howard pitched three innings for his first win of the season.

Kris Harvey hit his 16th home run of the season for the Tigers in the fourth inning.

Clemson, 11 games over .500 for the first time this season, returns to action this weekend with an ACC series at home with Georgia Tech.

The Tigers are 12-2 vs. the Yellow Jackets at Doug Kingsmore Stadium since Jack Leggett became head coach in 1994.
