Clemson #13 in Collegiate Baseball Poll

TUCSON, Ariz. — North Carolina (39-2) is ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s NCAA Division I baseball poll after winning 14 consecutive games.

The Tar Heels have been ranked at the top of the poll nine of the last 10 weeks. North Carolina is averaging 8.9 runs per game and features an offensive attack that has produced 137 extra base hits in 41 games. The pitching staff has a superb 2.13 ERA with 330 strikeouts and 135 walks.

Poll Notes: Several other teams have also been hot. N.C. State has won 14 in a row after sweeping a 3-game series at Georgia Tech. The Wolfpack has won 10 straight Atlantic Coast Conference games. South Florida (26-14) has won 12 in a row and sits in first place in the Big East Conference with a 10-2 record. Gonzaga has won 11 of its last 12 and beat Pepperdine two of three over the past weekend. New Mexico has won seven straight and leads the Mountain West Conference with a 14-4 record. Campbell (35-8) leads the Big South Conference with a 14-4 record and has won four in a row.

In key series over the past weekend, LSU beat Alabama two of three, Cal. St. Fullerton beat Cal. Poly two of three, Virginia swept Florida St. three games, UCLA took two of three at Oregon, Stanford beat Arizona two of three, South Carolina swept three from Kentucky, and Rice took two of three from Houston. Three teams fell out of the top 30 in Kentucky (0-4 last week), Coastal Carolina (1-3) and Bryant (2-3). New to the poll is Gonzaga (26-11-1), New Mexico (24-16) and Campbell (35-8).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
