Re: Finebaum calls Louisiana DA a 'buffoon' Posted: Jun 22, 2016 10:13 AM Reply
Would it really be the best option to throw these kids in jail and take away football from them?
If we did that that likely outcome would be that they would indeed just become criminals the rest of their lives.
At least with football they have a legitimate chance to be productive members of society.
THIS PERSON SHOULD NEVER TALK IN PUBLIC AGAIN. EVER.

Also he was trying to say we need stricter gun control last week, but yet he doesn't want to enforce the gun laws we have now.

Some are born bad and will never do right regardless of how many chances they get. But there are a lot more that is good inside and needs help seeing it in themselves. A tough life as a smaller kid gets to them. Most all kids just need to know that someone cares about them, and be proud of them....

If it's their 1st time of being caught, give them all another chance. Hopefully they will learn that they're not as slick as they thought they were. And hopefully they will spend more time learning to play FB, than they did finding and getting into trouble. Regardless of what anybody says, they are still just kids, and maybe with someone giving them a break, they will decide to do the best they can with it. Just make sure that they understand, one break per player with no 2nd chances!!!

I am entirely for rethinking/reforming our justice system

[ in reply to Re: I have had a few minutes to think about this--from classof09 ] |

It seems we create a criminal class when someone breaks the law and is sent into the system which does very little to reform (just punish).
With that said what should never happen is that a DA or prosecutor refuses to apply the law on a subjective basis depending on how far a guy can thrown a football or how hard he is to block on a blitz.
Do these guys need jail time? Probably not. But in a world where it is happening daily to all sorts of folks who don't have the opportunity to put on a uniform and entertain us, the law needs to be applied evenly.
I have zero interest in it, but pot should be legal and to punish someone as harshly as we do in many parts of this country for it is silly. BUT, and here's the caveat, the solution to that is to ammend the law, or barring that refuse to enforce it across the board. We can't refuse to enforce it simply because the dude has football talent.
And, as mentioned elsewhere, during our public discourse on guns we need to recognize that the laws on the books are not being applied consistently. How would we ever expect new laws to be applied evenly and be effective.

Do we have any evidence that the DA pursued these cases more harshly for others of similar ages?

We have his reasoning
Jun 22, 2016, 3:16 PM
|
|
Perhaps he misspoke, but he didn't say "They're young they have their whole lives in front of them."
He said that the chief reason he wouldn't prosecute these kids is because they've worked out and practiced a lot.
I actually understand his sentiment, but that exact same logic must be applied across the board to everyone facing the same charges as first time offenders. I'd argue the onus is on him to show that is the case, and not on me.

I don't know what he does.
You're the ones arguing he treated these players separately. The onus is on you to prove your claims.
