Winning memories of another 1-point loss....

Nov 2, 2005, 3:50 PM

I was talking with an 80-year-old fellow named Leonard Carter here in Faynam about a local church's anniversary. As he walked back with me to my car, he noticed the large orange paw affixed there.

"South View?" he asked, figuring I had kids at one of our local schools, which proudly uses the paw and orange...but which sent a top-flight lineman to Georgia.

"Nope, Clemson" I replied.

Well, this frail little (5-8 all of 95 pounds) fellow's eye lit up. "You went to Clemson? Did you know Coach Howard?"

I replied that I had chatted with the Baron several times.

"How about Bonnie Banks McFadden?"

But of course....

It turns out that this slight fellow grew up in the upstate and had been asked to play at Clemson and at PC. He stayed closer to home, going to PC, but always loved Clemson College. He was the kicker on the last Presbyterian team to beat Clemson, in 1943. By one point 13-12.

We stood and chatted for an extra 15 minutes about games that took played years before I was born. I told him if he ever felt up to it, I'd take him back to the Valley for a game.

"It's probably a little bigger than I remember it," he said, laughing.

"But it has the same spirit," I said.

"I don't know," he replied. "After we won that year, those folks were in a bad mood. It made our season, though."

"Yep, it's the same spirit. We lost to Ga. Tech by 1 point last weekend."

"Well," he said. "You'll get over it. Years from now, you won't remember the score, just your friends and your school."

I left feeling somewhat better about our season. And he's right. Years later, I don't really worry about the wins or losses of 30 years ago. But I do remember the school
and the good times.

It only took the view from 30 years down the road to remind me. A 1-point loss in 2005 is no different than one in 1943.

It's what we do with our time between them that matters.

I would suspect he may have known my dad from those days as well since they played against each other.

Well said. That man understands Clemson even though

he didn't go to school there. Just this morning I found a Clemson graduate who doesn't understand what Mr. Carter's whole point was.
