When was the first time a field goal post was torn down at

Aug 25, 2010, 3:42 PM

Clemson? Also, when was the first one ever torn down?

I was thinking about how crazy this concept is. Those things are EXPENSIVE, and not only that but they HAVE to be a pain in the butt to put up.

1935 at Dartmouth was the first I have found so far

Aug 25, 2010, 3:52 PM

1935
Dartmouth takes a 5-0 record to Yale Bowl. Seven times the Green is inside Yale’s 10 but leads only 7-6. Then Carl (Mutt) Ray intercepts a pass and makes it 14-6. Dartmouth fans tear down the goal posts with two minutes to play. The “Yale Jinx” is ended. After seven games, Dartmouth is still undefeated. So is Princeton. In a driving snowstorm, not even a drunken fan who tries to join Dartmouth’s goal line defense is enough. Princeton wins the famous “Snow Game,” 26-6.

It can't cost that much to put them up. Flash back 1998. I will call this the "Bronx cheer" of tearing down goal post. I think it only happened because so man were so happy to see that season end. Few weeks later and they are back but not level. They are then removed for the George Strait country music festival thing. Why was the labor even used to put back to start with?

not as much to put them up as it is to order them***

1981 Georgia?

Aug 25, 2010, 4:04 PM

Can't remember goal posts went down then. The USC game in '98, I was about 2 feet away from the post smaking me in the head.

I was pretty close in 98 too. Saw this idiot I know going for it and figured it would be much more fun to see him fall.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

remember that guy sliding up the left upright?

Aug 25, 2010, 4:09 PM

I thought when that thing broke, it was going to crush everyone below.

That may have been the guy I know.

I don't think they came down after UGA in 81 BUT it was the

most amazing thing ever. The fans stayed around in DV almost 15-20 minutes after the game just cheering--many from the comfort of their seats and not on the field. They didn't want to leave. We had just beat the defending National Champions. Only the Dawgs were gone. Only time I have seen that in the Valley.

One of the posts in 1998 ended up in Mauldin Hall (my dorm), where the freshman football players were housed.

the better question may be, when was the first time it

Aug 25, 2010, 4:20 PM

ended up in the reflection pond? ;)

1983 vs Maryland...

Aug 25, 2010, 4:21 PM

was the first one I saw in person come down at Death Valley.

That was the World Record Balloon Release game. The Tigers beat UM badly. After the game, there was a scheduled TigerBand "concert". The students took down the goal post and marched right through the band members, who were playing/marching on the field.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

After the USC game, we took it an upright across Bowman

Aug 25, 2010, 4:44 PM

then the SLED team showed up to our bonfire. They didn't appreciate the upright laying in the yard. They came up from the street right at Knickerbockers and had their SLED gear on and scared the bejeezus out of all of us. It was hilarious. Well.....now its hilarious.

noise the only reason I ever knew any sort of law enforcement to show up at a gathering.

Don't even get me started about that! I hated to see that

Aug 25, 2010, 8:36 PM

happen in Death Valley. No one is more excited about a huge win than me, but it makes no sense to vandalize our own stadium -- cost aside. I considered that extremely disrespectful to DV. I'm glad the new goal posts remedied that -- even though I wish it hadn't come to that point.

It's a piece of metal that cost like 8 grand.

1927 - Big Thursday - I have a piece of cloth that reads

Aug 25, 2010, 10:17 PM

"CLEMSON 20
U.S.C. 0
Oct. 20, 1927
STATE FAIR"

Below the fabric are the words "Taken from Goal Posts at Fair. Post burned at C.A.C."

I have no idea if it was the first one torn down, but it beats Dartmouth in 1935. Could this be another Clemson Tradition?

It is one of my prized possessions!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If you could confirm that -- it would be sweet.***
