This year's "mid-tier" Clemson Tiger basketball team

Finished 9-9 in conference... 7 of those 9 wins were against:
GT twice WF BC Pitt twice ND
That's 5 of the bottom 6 ... and we lost to Miami
Helluva way to measure our success

Which is pretty much the definition of a mid-tier team . . .

lose to teams above you and beat the teams below you.
Your point ?

If the ACC gets 7-8 teams in the NCAAT-- in a 15 team

conference

No one has tried to make that our measure of success.

Relative to our program history?

Absolutely. Way better than our historical average.
Relative to what we expected when the year started? No.

we returned 4 of 5 starters from a sweet 16 team. We couldn't get over the hump and win close games and missed the NCAA Tourney altogether. We made the NIT as the 69th team in the country after the previous 68 made the field for the NCAA's only to be pushed by Wright State and then lose to Witchita State at home in the second round.
It's about improving year to year once you reach a level like we had last year not ALWAYS comparing to Clemson of 1970 or whatever years you want to look back at. If you do that we will never succeed regularly!

It depends on how we view it.

In light of our program's history? Going .500 in the ACC and winning 20 games is outstanding. A half a dozen ACC teams this year would've been pleased with that also.
In light of what we expected/hoped for at the start of the season, I would say that this year was disappointing, especially since we were so close to having another NCAA Tournament team.

Last time I checked, you have to beat the bottom teams too.
Sincerely, the ghost of Tommy Past.
