Texas charging for the band now?

You would think Texas could afford to hand out a few free tickets to the band. Texas should be paying people to come to their games after Notre Dame.

There's something in these hills.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

I think they check IDs now.***

You do, and student tickets have your name on them (you print them yourself at home). Some of the ticket takers checked to make sure the student ID name matched the ticket name last Saturday.

They will need the extra $ when they fire their coach this season. They will have 2 who are being paid handsomely, for nothing.

Texas Tech Goin' Band is huge, going to cost them $60,000

Sep 10, 2015, 11:37 PM

600 seats for the Texas Tech Goin' Band from Raiderland. They might not be goin' so much if this keeps up.

Texas Tech will have to pay for tickets for its band members at the Nov. 26 game in Austin against the University of Texas Longhorns at a cost of up to $60,000.

Robert Giovannetti, senior associate athletics director of external operations, said Tech has not had to pay for the Goin’ Band’s seats at the UT game in the past, but that was part of what he called a “gentleman’s agreement” between the four Texas schools in the Big 12.

The business managers of the four Texas schools — including Texas Tech — got together in the past year and decided to start charging each other for band members’ tickets.

“They just decided very recently to do that,” Giovannetti said. “We were aware.”

He said the University of Texas was not “going rogue” in deciding to charge for the band members’ seats.

An official from UT who did not wish to be identified gave the same version of events, noting that selling the tickets makes it easier for accounting.

UT has made 3,800 seats available to Texas Tech, Giovannetti said, and 600 of those seats will be made available for the Goin' Band from Raiderland.

The tickets for the band members are $100 each.

The other seats will be available for Tech fans to purchase, so Tech will have a presence in one area of the stadium.

“If we don't sell all of ours, we’ll send them back to Texas, and they’ll sell to their fans or whatever,” Giovanetti said.

Tech has charged other schools in the past for bringing their bands to Lubbock, including the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, and was charged for seats at those schools when playing there, he said.

His reaction to the move by UT is that bands are a big part of the atmosphere at a college football game and it’s becoming more and more expensive for all schools to take those large groups to games, Giovannetti said.

But he said the Tech athletics department considers the Goin’ Band to be a part of its team, and wants the members to travel and be heard.

“That’s why they’re called the Goin’ Band,” Giovannetti said. “They’re great representatives of Texas Tech.”

The Tech athletics department and Tech President M. Duane Nellis’ office are splitting the cost of the band’s tickets to the UT game, Giovannetti said.

Why give anything to opposing schools? Texas can afford to give them free entry but they can also pay to buy tickets for the band at a lower cost when traveling to rival stadiums.
