Ode for Coach Penley and the Golf Team

A Tree--with Apologies to Joyce Kilmer

I think that I shall never see
A thing more loathsome than a tree.
A tree, whose long, out-reaching limbs
Obstructs the golfer whilst he swings.
A tree, whose autumn leaves do fall
And hides the golfer's newest ball.

The brilliant verses Kilmer wrote
On golf--will surely get one's goat.
When one can see his tee shot stop
Where Oak and Maple roots outcrop.
No words--poetic--will he say
That multiplies his score that way.

A tree will very often catch
Your ball in an important match.
And many times a ball I've seen
A'nesting in an evergreen.
Joyce Kilmer either couldn't hate,
or else he kept his tee shots straight.

A+ for effort...

AND this is on me - not you - I recall when I had English Lit a Clemson I found I was too literal. Probably still applies today as the poem seems a little morbid after such a great start by the Golf Team this year. Perhaps I am viewing the poem as a spectator (since I do not play golf) rather than a player. In any case A+ for effort. Or maybe I am just too #### literal (not liberal, mind you)

Go Tigers!!!
