Favorite Style of Barbeque
Feb 25, 2014, 11:25 AM
|

Serious question -
Maurice Bessinger's death made me think - what style of barbeque do you like the best?
Mustard based? Eastern NC vinegar based? Ketchup based? Beef or pork?
I like them all but my favorite is vinegar based pulled pork.

Don't like mustard anything. Beef or pork don't make much difference to me...I suppose I typically eat pork.

I like all sauces as well, but I like to mix mustard sauce with ketchup-based BBQ sauce. Mix it all up with coleslaw and baked beans......good eatin!

That place is my favorite BBQ in the state. All three sauces are good but I prefer the vinager. The best part is everything else they serve. Chicken stew, beef hash, fried chicken. If you ever go through the small town of Union SC stop and eat there!

I have had bad BBQ, and lots of good BBQ, but have yet to find GREAT, can't be beat BBQ. That includes SC, NC, GA and Memphis.
Skylight Inn is good. Only takes cash and you can get a pulled pork sandwich or plate. That's it. It was GOOD.
I have been traveling in Eastern NC for the last year or so and have eaten at the standards, old standbys, award winners,BBQ trail places like Parkers (Wilson,NC) Wilburs (Goldsboro), etc.
One I recommend you try is in Tarboro, NC - Blackbeards BBQ & C-Food (5232 U.S. 64 Alt, Tarboro, NC 27886) BBQ was GOOD, but the overall aura was Fan-Dam-Tastic. Had great fried okra and hushpuppies. They cook with smoke and heat the restaurant with smoke (wood stove). You get out of the car and you know you are in the right place.

Parker's isn't even a close second to the skylight ...... Cracklins and bark chopped up in the meat yum......
B's BBQ in Greenville or Jack Cobb and Son in Farmville is better than Parker's .... IMHO

For American, give me mustard sauce.
But if we're allowing international entries, nothing comes close to Brasilian BBQ (better known as churrasco) in my opinion.

I like Vinegar and I like Mustard. Each one about even, especially if they have a little hot bite.
Never really liked Maurice's. Found better BBQ other places.

BBQ is like sex in that even when it's bad it's still pretty good.
I guess I would have to say Vinegar based sauce on pulled pork. Grew up in the Midlands on mustard sauce, but I've grown to love a good vinegar & pepper sauce.
Red sauce belongs on chicken and beef IMO

Pulled Pork and Spareribs

I can eat it all but my favorite is vinegar. We don't call it North Carolina BBQ here in SC though. It's referred to as Williamsburg County or PeeDee BBQ. In my opinion you can't get any REAL BBQ without going to Williamsburg County. I live in Cootlumbia and they make what I refer to as roast pork here. If they ask you what kind of sauce you want when you order it, it isn't real BBQ!!! Real BBQ is cooked with the sauce on it!!
