He didn't play football at Clemson.
2 things I saw Murray do in Fike. Touched his chin on the rim. And spread his legs and jumped straight over a guy to lay the ball in. Unbelievable

Did he start in basketball? I thought he was in football, also, from the beginning.

In 1939, Banks was an All-American in BOTH basketball and football...the only Clemson athlete to do that! He only played one year in the NFL but distinguished himself that year by leading the league in YPC. Amazing athlete by any standard!

Stan Rome was an OUTSTANDING high school football player. Played for Valdosta High (GA) in the early 70s. I was a student at Valdosta State at the time. Saw him play several games. He and his brother both played while I was there.
Remember, we are talking early 70s when you read this story I'm about to relay to you.
48 hours after signing his letter, he was driving a brand new Chevy Monte Carlo. He came from a low income family. When asked how he paid for it his momma explained, "Every since he was a baby, I've been stuffing money under my bed and telling him, "If you go to college I'll buy you a new car."

Speaking of athletes and cars

I was at Clemson when Larry Nance played. Saw him often cruising around campus in a ratty, bronze/brown colored beater of a Chevy - I think it was a 60’s model Nova. I always chuckled about it, thinking that he would never be accused of being paid to attend/play at Clemson.
He was always a favorite of mine in his years in the NBA.

Back in the 70s time frame a new car was the "common" theme associated with a star football or hoops guy signing with a school. The NCAA seemed vry disinterested. "He paid cash for it, so we can't trace it to a booster."
