Just to clarify, Sportsbooks' goal is to have even money on both sides of the line (which is why the lines move) so they do not have large exposure to one game's outcome and the income they recognize is known as the 'vig'. So when you say 'people obviously like to lose money' it's not necessarily accurate because in an ideal situation half the money bet are winners and the other half losers.

For example:

$100m bet on Clemson game tonight. Their ideal situation is to have $50m on Clemson covering, $50m on Wright State covering. Since you bet $110 to win $100 (vig = 10%), the sportsbook would make $5m with no risk on the outcome of the game.

Makes sense?
