I liked Reggie, he was like a bowling ball out there bouncin

off tacklers

He was a fun guy to watch and a fan favorite

Sep 3, 2014, 12:39 PM

But he probably wouldn't have played much in the last few years with the talent we've had. Even in his years as the featured tailback he never averaged over 5 YPC and didn't have much more than 700 yards rushing.

Reggie gets one of my votes. I'll never forgive Bowden for not putting him in the home game against Carolina. The stadium was chanting his name. Spiller and Davis weren't doing much that day but Reggie had 26 yards on 4 carries and he was moving the ball...Dang it !

Chad gets my other vote .

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Spiller actually tore it up in that game

Sep 3, 2014, 12:53 PM

Davis did have a pretty rough game, though.

Ramond Priester and Emory Smith trucked a few defenders back in the 90's

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Emory was technically a fullback, wasn't he?***

Definitely Chad Jasmin!***

Ray gets my vote too....and he "toted the tater" 20-30

Sep 3, 2014, 12:32 PM

times per game (and more)...Ray could outrun most LBs and by the 4th Q, CBs were tired of getting run over.

Raymond Priester was a big guy (and slow) but never

Sep 3, 2014, 12:28 PM

was really punishing.

Kevin Mack

Sep 3, 2014, 12:35 PM

Dude was terrifying.

We've had some great backs since then, and some of them were bruisers. But he was just in a different class.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wait - He may be DQ'd from this conversation

Sep 3, 2014, 12:37 PM

because he was a fullback, if I remember correctly.

RESEARCH INTERN: I have an internet project for you.

Raymond Priester without a doubt. The kid lacked speed, but never shied away from contact.

James Davis was a close second, but used his better speed to allude defenders.

Re: who would you say was the last real punishing tail back

Sep 3, 2014, 12:52 PM

Terry Allen was the toughest tail back I've ever seen at Clemson, but I'm not sure you could call his running style as punishing. You might have to go all the way back to Ray Yauger to have someone to fit that description.

Chad Jamsmin, Emory Smith and Kevin Mack who have been mentioned all played full back.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We have had some good backs, but I don't think

Sep 3, 2014, 1:14 PM

we've ever had one like Gurley or Rogers. At least in my memory.

Ray Yauger***

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Kenny Flowers fit that profile. Big and fast...

Sep 3, 2014, 4:18 PM [ in reply to We have had some good backs, but I don't think ]

About as close to those two in my opinion. Didn't have the career those two had though

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

James Davis, Reggie Merriweather, Duane Coleman

Sep 3, 2014, 2:18 PM

Davis was more of a hybrid...he could smash or he could dash, depending on the situation. I'd hate to see him coming my way though.

But I would have been absolutely terrified to see Duane Coleman coming my way. That guy played every play like he wanted to destroy anyone who touched him.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: James Davis, Reggie Merriweather, Duane Coleman

Sep 3, 2014, 2:19 PM

...Coleman was that way on both sides of the ball but I do remember he played tailback with equal intensity. Dude just mowed people down.
