He was a fun guy to watch and a fan favorite

But he probably wouldn't have played much in the last few years with the talent we've had. Even in his years as the featured tailback he never averaged over 5 YPC and didn't have much more than 700 yards rushing.

Reggie gets one of my votes. I'll never forgive Bowden for not putting him in the home game against Carolina. The stadium was chanting his name. Spiller and Davis weren't doing much that day but Reggie had 26 yards on 4 carries and he was moving the ball...Dang it !
Chad gets my other vote .

Davis did have a pretty rough game, though.

Ramond Priester and Emory Smith trucked a few defenders back in the 90's

times per game (and more)...Ray could outrun most LBs and by the 4th Q, CBs were tired of getting run over.

Dude was terrifying.
We've had some great backs since then, and some of them were bruisers. But he was just in a different class.

Raymond Priester without a doubt. The kid lacked speed, but never shied away from contact.
James Davis was a close second, but used his better speed to allude defenders.

Terry Allen was the toughest tail back I've ever seen at Clemson, but I'm not sure you could call his running style as punishing. You might have to go all the way back to Ray Yauger to have someone to fit that description.
Chad Jamsmin, Emory Smith and Kevin Mack who have been mentioned all played full back.

James Davis, Reggie Merriweather, Duane Coleman

Davis was more of a hybrid...he could smash or he could dash, depending on the situation. I'd hate to see him coming my way though.
But I would have been absolutely terrified to see Duane Coleman coming my way. That guy played every play like he wanted to destroy anyone who touched him.

...Coleman was that way on both sides of the ball but I do remember he played tailback with equal intensity. Dude just mowed people down.
