the "sack" on Logan Thomas-Dinnich...

Posted: Oct 22, 2012 7:43 AM

I'm sure it has been discussed ad-nauseum, but a guy in my section said if your feet are completely wrapped up they blow the play dead because you are vulnerable and can't defend yourself... Is this true or does anyone else have a better explanation?

Dumb rule if true....

Without looking it up, I can't say yes or no definitively. It does sound reasonable, though. He was basically teed up for a David Dunham-like blow-up. There just happened not to be anyone with a head of steam to light him up.

Yep, judgement call

The Ref made a judgement call and called him in the grass. Meaning he thought it was dangerous for the play to continue and blew it dead to protect the QB. I'm shocked it happened.

Obviously, the ref was focused on the QB and wasn't

surveying the field. He saw how immobile Thomas was and quickly blew the play dead. After seeing the bigger picture, he may have regretted it.

That's definitely something you don't see everyday

VT guy behind us was LIVID - as I am sure I would have been too.

Unfortunately he was a nice guy until that point, then he quickly turned into a real a-hole

A new one for TNet dictionary "in the grass" ;-)

yeah i was dumbfounded...i'd be pissed if that was Tahj's

play that was taken away. I thought they blew it dead too quickly...i'll take it but I would be royally pist if that was flipped and we were down and just converted a big 3rd down.

You can't have it both ways.....

There are all sorts of rules in place that were created in order to keep the QB safer and less likely to get injured, so you can't be in favor of or benefit from those and then complain about a rare "in the grasp" type call.

That said, had this been called on the Clemson, QB it would have agitated me just like it did the VT fans.

How many times have we had to endure BS calls?

With ACC officials, it's always a very real possibility....

and the one-eyed blind men who officiated Saturday's game were pretty bad. They even managed to completely botch replay reviews. I think they got every review wrong.

You're right...........if a Clemson LB had levelled Thomas

while he was basically in the grasp and defenseless, the LB would've gotten a personal foul flag.

Truly, you can't have it both ways. Either you protect the QB or you don't.

There are a number of "judgement" calls every game by officials, both teams AND FANBASES just have to live with them.

My viewpoint is: If the refs don't stop the play, then we end LT's season with a vicious hit - VT fans (and Dinich) would be making lots of noise about that. The refs made the correct call even though there was nobody close enough to hit LT. The refs had no way to know that LT could get rid of the ball soon enough.

Looked like an NFL call. They are big on in the grasp and protecting the qb
