Take an axe and chop some slits in it. Helps.

HOW DO I MAKE A BURN BARREL? MATERIALS NEEDED FOR A BURN BARREL: 55 gallon, open head (open on one end) steel drum (not plastic) handgun or drill for making air holes 2 concrete blocks metal grate or heavy fencing section to cover barrel opening piece of sheet metal to cover barrel opening
ASSEMBLING THE BURN BARREL Place air holes in your metal drum for air to enter during the burning process. How you put holes in the drum is up to you. Some people use a drill, others use a handgun.

the bottom, and cut a little window at the bottom to let the ash fall out, and to draft air better.
That barrel will turn cherry red it gets so hot. Also, for shiits, you can put a propane blow torch and a leaf blower on that bottom window and create a decent forge. Great science lesson for the kids.

This is how we burned all of our trash growing up

Every now and then an aerosol can would burst out setting the grass on fire and we would stomp it out.

Grandparents burnt trash. They separated cans, etc. so that didn't happen.

back before they outlawed un-enclosed styrofoam

blocks under peoples docks on lake murray, we used to have them wash up all the time at our house.
We live on a point that catches tons of wind, so it was very common for break-away boats, dock sections, etc. to blow up at our shore.
My dad would make my brother and I gather up the Styrofoam and burn it in the yard. There would be a thick column of cancerous black smoke that I'm sure you could see from space.
In hindsight, that probably wasn't a good idea.
