The sum total of just their QB arrests dating back to Blake
Jun 22, 2012, 6:36 PM
|
|
Mitchell and Svelle Newton to Steven Garcia are greater than the sum total of our entire team over the same period. We could throw in their QB coach in the total, but some Gamecocks might accuse us of piling on.

speaking of coaches, are they paid by athletic dept. fund-raising money only, or, are tax-payer dollars going towards their salaries, because i think if they are getting the tax dollar money, a coach convicted of a crime, regardless of how small, should be terminated immediately.

I'd agree with that, but push it as a felony. Any coach

convicted of a felony needs immediate termination. Of course, these people are supposed to be role models and lead by example, too. So I don't know. Some misdemeanors should also be considered.

it might get removed (doubt it), but let's see it.
Back in the Hatfield and west era we had a fair number of arrests, but after West's players cycled out, by 2003 or so, we have had very few. Again, Blake Mitchell was arrested at least twice, same for Sevelle Newton, once for theft. I forget how many times Garcia was arrested.
The only Qb we had arrested over that period was arrested long after he played football at Clemson (Willie Simmons).
We have had less than half the number of arrests over the last ten years than SCAR.

but I left those in because many Clemson fans in the past have accused us of pulling scholarship to make room for other recruits when this happens. Just killing 2 birds with one stone by showing it happens everywhere. You may also note that our list contains mostly underage drinking and normal college age pranks while Clemson's has many more serious incidents like assault and drug possession. Most of the stuff on our list would not even led to an arrest in Clemson.

since when is recruiting violations, suspended from games, academically inegliable and transferring, are considered arrest. You just threw a bunch of filler in to make it look like the numbers are somewhat close, and one of the arrest (that i know of) isn't even a football player. Only 8 Clemson football players have been arrested in the last 10 years.

I think we have to have more arrests so not sure where those numbers come from. Unfortunately for us, i think it has alot to do with columbia. I dont think its really a difference in team character. Think the teams are probably very similar. I think some of our young men would do better in clemson and some of yalls would do worse in columbia. Parents are not stupid. There is a reason so many parents like clemson. When alot of our players have gotten in trouble they have been in the company of people who were not college students. Just columbia residents they have met. Thats not a big issue in clemson. Much less likely to end up in a bad situation with a bad crowd. Not much we can do about it. Kids are gonna hang out with people they meet and alot of kids are impressionable. I guess you could ban going to clubs. Probably where they meet most non-students. They will just go anyway. Going out and having a good time is a huge part of being away at college. I think our older players could have more of an impact than our coaches. Wish someone come up with some kind of a plan. Not only hurts the team and recruiting but more importantly it hurts the kids. Just dont think much can be done though with certain kids.

Reasonable post...for a coot. There is a lot of opportunity to get into trouble in Columbia, moreso than Clemson. Athens doesn't have as much going on as Cootlumbia but they have a HUGE problem with the law. But I'm not going to generalize that the teams have the same character. The allure of 5 Points is a reason people choose SCAR, and a lot of them are not the most high character guys. Every team has a few bad apples, just there's more that wear garnet

I took out transfers and underage drinking, etc. Our list is longer because the Columbia Police look for athletes to arrest and the Clemson Police look the other way many times I believe. But there's no comparison when you compare the serious stuff where real crimes or injuries to others occurred (Assault & Battery of a high & aggravating nature, Rape, Counterfeit, Large amounts of drugs, etc). Clemson wins that category hands down.
Clemson:
5/12 Sammy Watkins arrested for Marijuana and Possession of Controlled substance 5/12 Amadou-Tidiane Daniel Dia arrested for Marijuana and Possession of Controlled substance 2/12 Joe Craig was arrested on a criminal domestic violence 8/11 Marlena Wesh in Domestic Disturbance not arrested but suspended 8/11 Joe Craig in Domestic Disturbance not arrested but suspended 1/11 Brandon Thomas arrested for Disorderly Conduct 5/10 Jamie Cumbie arrested for Assault & Battery of a high and aggravated nature 6/08 DeAndre McDaniel arrested, aggravated assault, battery on girlfriend 3/08 Cortney Vincent, suspended for spring practice due to undisclosed violation of team rules 12/06 Duane Coleman arrested, pot 7/06 Roman Fry was driving the personal watercraft that struck and killed the school's assistant track coach, alcohol was involved 2005 Duane Coleman, suspended after verbal conflict with the coach 2/05 Xavier Littleberry, suspended for violation of team rules, exposed himself to a maid? 11/05 Cortney Vincent arrested, assault on girlfriend 12/01 Travis Zachery, arrested, drugs 12/01 Travis Zachery, suspended from school - related to drug arrest 12/01 Travis Zachery, kicked off the football team - related to drug arrest 12/01 Akil Smith, arrested, drugs 12/01 Akil Smith, suspended from school - related to drug arrest 12/01 Akil Smith, kicked off the football team - related to drug arrest 4/01 Tyrone Dewayne Dickerson, arrested, theft 4/01 Marcus Keenan Lewis, arrested, theft 4/01 Paul White Jr., arrested, theft 4/01 Tyrone Dickerson, suspended from team related to arrest for theft and setting off fire alarms 4/01 Marcus Lewis, suspended from team related to arrest for theft and setting off fire alarms 4/01 Paul White Jr., suspended from team related to arrest for theft and setting off fire alarms 11/2000 Paul White Jr. indicted on counterfeiting charges $100 bills 11/2000 Eugene Koon indicted on counterfeiting charges $100 bills 1995 Antwuan Wyatt arrested after 36 bags of Marijuana found in his room, dismissed 1995 Anthony Downs arrested after 36 Bags of Marijuana found in his room, dismissed 1995 Another player arrested after 36 bags of Marijuana found in his room but was allowed to return 7/95 July, a nightclub dancer said she was sexually assaulted by seven Clemson athletes, including five football players. 4/95 Sam Zanders arrested for marijuana possession 1995 Raymond Priester charged in July with billing long-distance phone calls to a retired woman 1995 Adrian Dingle charged with ###### a freshman 1995 Eric Williams charged with ###### a freshman

Fixed to reflect single incidences (the old list had arrests, suspensions, and "kicked off football team" for ONE INCIDENT. THREE LINES FOR ONE INCIDENT? Weak...)"
Also fixed for 2000-present. You're crazy if you think it's fair to bring up Clemson arrests from 1995. Also removed soccer and track players (because it's stupid that you included them). Also removed arbitrary suspensions/incidents that you didn't include in Carolina's tally (you only included arrests in Carolina's list. Kinda skewed.
The list also has Sammy's most recent arrest, but doesn't reflect Carolina's arrests since 2009 (really fair, right?). Feel free to tack those on i you find them.

I am missing something here. According to a quick Google search, I see that a S. Carolina DL is in jail on a 3rd degree criminal sexual conduct charge. Either he is in jail w/out being arrested or you don't consider that serious. What am I missing - maybe charges were dropped? I honestly don't know.
Several other arrests turned up in a quick search of "gamecock football players arrested", so I have my doubts as to the voracity of this data. But that is all of the data that I have right now, so….
Let's try to make this as objective as possible.
I cut and pasted this into a spreadsheet and summed all of the incidents that had "arrested" or "charged" in them (I'm no lawyer, but I assume you get arrested when you are charged, so for this tally, arrest = charged.) I did not include entries that referred to dismissals relating to arrests. So, the total numbers of arrests are as follows:
Clemson total = 25, Carolina total = 36.
I am surprised it is that close.
Now as I alluded to above, there appear to be some data missing in these lists, certainly at least one from S. Carolina’s list.
We can get into a urinating contest about whose offense is worse, but unless an agreed upon scale is used, it is a waste of bandwidth and what I assume is valuable time. Speaking of which, this took all of 5 minutes – not a bad price for clarity.

He was notified in April that his schollie would not be renewed and he left the team at that time. Try again.

So why was he not on the list as "scholarship not renewed"? You put Clemson players on there

Did you not read in the post that his corrected list does not include Carolina arrests post-2009? Can't expect much from a coot, though.

Went back and looked... I don't see that. Like I said, I may be missing something - wouldn't be the first time.
However, I was specifically responding to the statement that "The Gamecocks have had no arrests since 09 that would make this serious offense list. Clemson has had a bunch." That simply is not true... makes you wonder who is really sitting behind that keyboard!
