How many of you had relatives associated with Clemson before

Jun 22, 2018, 10:22 AM

You attended or graduated?

I had a relative that was head of mathematics at Clemson college. Another that graduated in electrical engineering at Clemson College. Another that was on Board of trustees. I have a first cousin that attended, but did not graduate. He later became Army CID in Germany and South Korea. Another that was cross country runner at Clemson University. There are probably more, but these are the ones I know of right now.

my dad and his twin brother graduated in 74-ish
my mom attended and transferred to Carolina after my dad graduated to be closer to him and live at her parents

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My older cousin attended in the mid-late '80s, but

Jun 22, 2018, 11:45 AM

didn't graduate. He got a ton of life insurance money when his mom died, and partied like a rockstar fratboy. Ended up getting his masters and PhD in Economics from UK, and he's a college perfesser now at University of North Dakota. But he'll always be a Clemson guy at heart.

Holmewood. Built in 1832 by William Prothro, a wealthy planter, and his wife Sara Ann Lowe, a granddaughter of Edgefield founder Arthur Simkins, Holmewood is one of the largest houses in Edgefield with some of the finest hand-carved woodwork in the area. The house was purchased in 1846 by Francis Hugh Wardlaw (1800-1861), a prominent local lawyer and judge of the Chancellery Court who lived here until his death in 1861. Wardlaw is best remembered as the author of the South Carolina Ordinance of Secession. Between 1865 and 1875, former Governor Milledge Luke Bonham (1813-1890) lived here with his family. Governor Bonham had been a U.S. Congressman, Confederate General and second War Governor of South Carolina. In 1903 the property was purchased by Thomas Hobbs Rainsford (1861-1932) whose family has resided here ever since.

I’m the first one to graduate or even attend. Graduated twice, actually. I’m the first of my family as far as I know to graduate from a 4 year university. My dad grew up in a house with a dirt floor. He started working when he was 12. He retired just a few weeks ago. I’m very proud of him. Very very proud.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Proud you should be....

Jun 23, 2018, 7:49 AM

Cherish your time with him. My Dad was raised without a father (he died at 40), in a hose without running water(they had a hand pump well), and a outhouse. He served in WWII and Korea. He sent me to Clemson. Best Dad Ever. He passed on at 94 years. I miss him.
