All this talk of retirement - how much $$$

Oct 8, 2020, 1:53 PM

is your goal for retirement? Combination of cash, stocks, bonds, property, etc. What is your number for total assets to feel comfortable? 1 million, 2 million, a trailer with a nice pallet deck?

I guess do not include social security as no one knows if that will be around or not.

I’m thinking I’ll land somewhere between $2-3M

Could be more. Could be less, but I don’t think so. Depends on when I actually retire and a lot of other goings on between now and then. Rule of thumb is investments should double about every 7 years if invested well.

They double every 7 years at 12%.

In the 1990s when savings accounts paid 5%,that was realistic.

Not so much now.

The S&P averaged 10% from 1986 - 2016.

12% would double in 6 years roughly.

As much as I can get.

seems more reasonable.

Seriously. When I retire, wife has a state retirement and I have a little squirreled away. Hopefully it grows up but if not, I guess I can use SS or other Gov't Benefits.

I mean your odds are good that at least 1 out of your 8 children will be successful enough to support you later on.
