Worst supporting team ever for a Heisman Weiner?

Sep 7, 2020, 11:33 AM

No doubt, has to be the Coots. 8-4 was a pretty meager record to spawn a Heisman winner in 1980.

Losses were to the REAL USC, Georgia, CLEMSON, of course, and to Pitt in their Bowl game.

Actually Notre Dame in around 1957 when Paul Hornung won with a 3-7 team.

I attended the USuC/Pitt bowl game in 1980.

I attended the USuC/Pitt game as a guest of my coot 1st cousin. We sneaked in 2 half pints of Jim Beam each. The couple in front of us had 3 seats but one of their people was a no-show. They graciously offered a security guard to sit on the end seat right in front of us. It made mixing/drinking drinks precarious. It was foggy and chilly. It was foggy enough that we couldn't see plays on the other end of the field. On a good note, the hottest coot cheerleader (from my hometown of Greenwood, SC) was right in front of us from our corner endzone seats. The story was that USuC had given George Rogers Novocain in both hands so that he could play in the game without extreme pain since his hands had been severely beaten by helmets all season long since USuC had leaned on him heavily all season long. I think that he fumbled the first time that he carried the ball? Hugh Green was on that Pitt team.
