Why did I have to research this for myself (Heisman related)

Dec 10, 2019, 12:10 PM

Trevor gets skewered for those early interceptions, several of which were not entirely his fault.

Let's look at how well the 4 CFP QBs protected the ball THIS SEASON:

Lawrence - 8 INT (1 PER 42 ATTEMPTS), 0 FUMBLE (0 PER 77 ATTEMPTS), 8 TOTAL (1 TO PER 51.75 PLAYS)
Burrow - 6 INT (1 PER 73 ATTEMPTS), 3 FUMBLE (1 PER 32 ATTEMPTS), 9 TOTAL (1 TO PER 59.44 PLAYS)
Fields - 1 INT (1 PER 308 ATTEMPTS), 8 FUMBLE (1 PER 15 ATTEMPTS), 9 TOTAL (1 TO PER 47.89 PLAYS)
Hurts - 7 INT (1 PER 44 ATTEMPTS), 8 FUMBLE (1 PER 27 ATTEMPTS), 15 TOTAL (1 TO PER 35.20 PLAYS)

So Trevor had the least total turnovers, and the second highest rate of plays per turnover.

Can't say there are any real conclusions to draw from this, but it is interesting that Trevor gets lit up for turning the ball over and the others get invited to the Heisman presentation. I think Burrow pretty clearly deserves to win, but Trevor should be in NYC, and I would take him as my QB over Joe.

Trevor also had fewer turnovers than Burrow in 2018 on similar attempts. In 2018, Trevor turned it over once every 57.25 plays and Burrow once every 50.70 plays. Hurts turned it over 3 times in 106 plays (35.33) and Fields once in 81 plays (81.00).

One more tidbit - Fields had the lowest rate of plays/TD, Trevor was second, Hurts 3rd, Burrow 4th.

The Heisman is all about stats in Sept/October.

Yeah, I think it gets lost in the conversation that TL has fewer turnovers than Fields. Has he rushed less? Yes, 77 rushes to 123 but has 407 yards compared to 471 and 7TDs to Fields 10.

And then TL is a better passer (higher % completion rate), more yardage, more completions. Only threw 29 more passes. Also he has taken fewer sacks.

Exactly right about the Sept/Oct...it’s why Lamar Jackson

won despite a very pedestrian end of his season. It didn’t matter because ESPN was hyping him up too much already.

For a team that gets better throughout the season, the trophy just doesn’t fit.

I heard someone on Tv suggest that the Heisman voting should take place after the entire seasn is over. Seems right to me.

It isn't... it is about media coverage and really espn

These voters go by what they see on tv and ESPN controls much of that.

The voters won't watch whole games.. but they will watch highlights.

It's an ESPN trophy now.

Interesting statistics - thanks for posting.

It's a popularity contest...

Dec 10, 2019, 12:34 PM

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

It's not a popularity contest it's a stats contest

Trevor stats aren't on the same level. Simple as that...
