Made no sense-was really scratching head about that one

Yeah I didn't understand that one

Would've been 4th and 13 and definitely out of field goal range. Having them on 4th down instead of 3rd is worth more than the 10 yard penalty, IMO.

My guess is they were thinking the yardage for a FG was more

important than down and distance at that point.

If we decline the penalty, it's 4th down and they either

have to kick a 67-yd field goal or pick up 13 yds in one play, or it's game over. I know it all worked out, but I honestly think there was a miscalculation or miscommunication, because for the life of me I don't know who wouldn't take that.

I'm not gonna lie, I thought him taking that penalty was gonna end up costing us the game.

Not sure but highly suspect this was the thought process of our staff:

FSU - No timeouts; 0:49 secs remaining. I think we were guarding against a TD.

It would be harder to move 60 yards against our defense in 49 secs than 50 yards. Even though it would have been 4th down, 13 yards was pretty attainable. I think they felt they could force a play LT 23 yards and keep the clock rolling.

Not sure but hard to complete a long pass with Wilkins, Dex and our DEs putting big-time pressure. Easier to complete a 13 yard pass in that situation.

I thought we're going to decline it.

But my guess is that it showed confidence in the defense.

Clemson is among the top defense in the nation, giving up 4.5 yards per play. Clemson is also among the top pass defense in the nation, giving up 5.64 yards per pass. Look at these stats. Basically, it might be a good idea to trade 10 yards per play.

You can look at it another way too. In counter argument to that one would probably say it gave another opportunity for the opponent to play, there was no guarantee whatsoever that, if we declined the penalty, the exact same next play like it did happen wouldn't have happened. (They converted 3rd and 23.) So, that means they could gained 23 yards on the next play.

Just keep in mind that not everything will be successful as expected or planned, but the coaches sure know what they're doing.

He was concerned about field goal range.

Wouldn't have mattered they picked up 25 yards on the next play anyway

Their kicker is a stud as his brother was before him with a cannon for a leg (and accuracy to match). I think the distance was the deciding point. With Aguayo the cool little field goal line doesn't mean much.
