Where Beating Your Rival Ranks

It doesn't matter the school, the only logical order of goal priorities for a D1 school is:
(1) winning each weekly game (2) winning the division (3) winning the Conference (4) winning every game (including your rival) (4) winning the National title
No other order makes sense to a program. Period. Therefore, beating your rival can NOT come before winning your conference. Otherwise, you may never have a shot at the ultimate goal of a NC. Is it important, yes. But it can't be the end all.
If you only had two choices, would you rather: [Results]

Winning the ACC is #1

Winning BCS bowl is #2 for me and then SC. National relevance is more important and beating SC every year never got us anything. When we were 8-0, we were the talk of ESPN

Incredible to me that any Clemson fan would say that

winning the ACC is more important than beating SC. Most of the country can't even tell you who won the Acc last year yet I have to live with reminders 365 days a year in this state of the SC game. Beating that sorry bunch in Columbia is PRIORITY ONE.

I guess it's personal preference for everyone.

In 1991, I was 7 years old when we won the ACC, so I don't remember it very well.
So last year's ACC Championship was a phenomenal feeling.
But it does not even come close to any of the wins I've seen over South Carolina. Accomplishments are diminished if you don't beat South Carolina. It's why Tommy Bowden was able to stick around for so long. People bash him often, but he knew what priority #1 was and he did it well.
Beating South Carolina is more important than anything else.

NCSU and GT also have scoreboard over us

I'm in Atl. Being GT's b!t#$ isn't much fun.
It all depends on the goals of the season. You can win any conference and still lose a significant portion of your games. You can't win the NC and lose more than 1 and it better be early....and you need to win the conference.
If you are 6-5 then beating your rival is job #1. If you are 11-1 going to play for the big trophy it really doesn't matter who you lost to.
Losing your last game always takes the luster off a season or if you win the last one it can polish a turd going into the next one.

I think a big part of this depends on where you live

Those of us that live and work with coots can't stand to lose to them. If we won the ACC every year but they always beat us, that would just make it easier for them to argue that winning the ACC is like winning the special olympics.

Just tell them to kiss the ring, ACC and BCS ring

Thing is if we're winning the ACC every year, SC will be a victim in most years. The only time they won their league it was the ACC atlantic champs who stomped them

FSU in the 90s proves you have to beat your rivals

The wide rights and losses to Miami kept them from having multiple national championships. Depending on what happens with other teams, you might be able to drop a random game and still make the NC, but if you consistently lose to 1 team you dont get the benefit of the doubt.
And in reality, you can win your conference with a record barely over .500 depending on what you do in a division.

would never choose between either....
But if I had a gun to my head and were forced I'd choose a nice good 63-17ish over ACC title any day of the fall...

...for any true fan to answer. I would never accept either condition. I always go into every season hoping for both and in most years believe it possible!

the importance of the sc game. If cu was on a winning streak, it would be reeeeally important. But, as you suggested, you CAN have both. You just have be sure and beat sc.
As a grad of both cu and sc, and gamecock fan, I think cu wins this year. You should win at home. Two fairly evenly matched teams. You should win

Win the ACC and beat the chickens.. I want both!!
One without the other is like turkey without dressing...it's not Thanksgiving!
So I'm greedy...deal with it.
