Good article on strategy behind Bubble Screens

Oct 12, 2017, 5:10 PM

I know a lot of people complain when they see us running bubble screens that don't seem to be working. In my opinion, the OC's run them for two reasons. We have elite athletes who could break a big play down the sidelines if the D makes a mistake. But maybe more importantly, it makes the D show more of their tendencies than they would on other play calls (which is why we usually run them early in the game) and it helps our running game by making their D more hesitant to load the box. One thing i'm sure of is that the OC's have earned the benefit of doubt; they know what they are doing, know whether it's working, and will make quick adjustments if it's not.

Thank you, Mr.Rob Spence, for that valuable insight.
They didn't seem to work then, and they don't seem to be working now either.

Is it possible we are running the ball up the middle better because we require teams to defend against bubble screens?

I actually like a tunnel screen, which can go for huge YAC. Not a fan of the bubble screen that only works in rare instances. I'd rather throw a Hail Mary into a crowd than the bubble screen. Teams blow that play up so often, you'd think we might figure that out eventually.

They seem to work better when you have a Sammy Watkins

out there catching the screen.

They also work better when you have a guy like Charone Peake blocking.

Outside of saying just "brains," zombies can also say "bubble screen" as the play is obvious even to them.

I know there needs to be more zip on the ball throwing to the side like that. KB has been playing catch a couple of times and it makes me more than nervous to watch him casually toss it to the sideline hoping the player in front makes his block.

Hunter Johnson has the zip***
