We are last in the ACC in endowment. Anybody know why

Jun 28, 2013, 8:37 PM

we lag so far behind in this area?

Why?

Because Clemson is a smaller public school in a small poor (relative other states) state.

and no Law or Med school. We should have a vet school. That would help.***

No reason Clemson shouldn't have a Vet school

Jun 29, 2013, 2:54 AM

My wife went to undergrad at Clemson, but had to go to UT (DVM) and then Texas A&M(residency and PHD) for Vet school. The following states have a Vet school: Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi. There is no reason why South Carolina does not have a Vet school (which pulls in research money for both animal and human medicine).

I personally know 4 vets that went to CU undergrad and UGA to get their DVM. This should be a priority for us.

I do see later in the thread that we are 61st in the nation,

which doesn't seem too bad.

For most of our history we were a small, all-male, military,

agricultural school. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but it doesn't give you a huge base to gather donations from. Most people aren't in a position to donate large amounts to their alma mater until later in life. It is only in recent years that this demographic of Clemson alumni has begun expand. It would take some huge donations for us to catch many of our ACC brethren, but there is no reason to think we can't keep pace from this point forward.

Note the post from MD regarding their president

Jun 28, 2013, 8:48 PM

They got a new president who improved their endowment substantially. Clemson needs to look at potential candidates with this in mind.

I'm sure whoever we bring in will work to continue the process of improving facilities and increasing the endowment started by Barker.

No law school and no medical school. Check out what the top group of this list have in those categories.
It makes a big difference in the number of deep pockets that exist in the alumni base.

Yeah South Carolina is a broke state and the school has traditionally been small. Lack of graduate programs hurts too. We are going to need a Phil Knight/Kevin Plank/billionaire alum to help us. As far as I know we don't have any super rich Clemson grads.

It's actually kind of sad how weak our list of famous alumni is in comparison to other ACC schools.
