Was 63-17 a bad thing?

Dec 18, 2012, 8:28 PM

Not the win itself, that was glorious. Since that game, the coots have won more times than us, obviously the last four in a row. They have outscored us 206 to 178 since then. Was that night the straw that broke the camel's back? Did that hurt them so badly that they decided to pull out all the stops. Just wondering what y'all thought.

It was just one game ! I am sure the fan base was upset but with all the losing they were doing to us I wouldn't think this one game kicked them into gear. Just coaching and a sleigh of the hand ! More sleigh of the hand than coaching....

Dec 18, 2012, 9:32 PM

things changed for us after that

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Pretty sure we won the next two in 04 and 05.

Dec 18, 2012, 9:30 PM

Then won two again in 07 and 08. So to answer your question; no.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think it was because......

Dec 18, 2012, 9:49 PM

it kept Lou Holtz as the coach, he would have left at the end of that year if not for the beat down, he stayed on and that kept Skip Holtz from being their next coach and then he (skip) left and that opened the door for the OLD Ball Sack to be hired as the next coach. It also kept Tommy as our coach and possibly kept us from hiring a better coach.

Spurrier is the reason for their success. He's truly a great coach and it's not just that they beat us. They're a legitimately good team.

My friend, who is not a Clemson fan, doesn't see the ##### staying this high up as Spurrier plays out his contract (6 more years max?) and then the time after.

I have pondered the same thing, not that it was a "bad" thing because obviously it was a beat down that we will always remember. However, I think I know what you're asking.

Sometimes not achieving something or an embarrassment like that is the impetus for major changes. Obviously the change wasn't immediate but I think many of their major donors, etc had enough and I think they are reaping some of the benefits now. The question remains: "how" did they do it. Something just don't pass the smell test for me about their program right now.

Having Said that, I firmly believe, even though we won the ACC and ten games the last two seasons, we were also embarrassed in the Orange bowl and then the loss the the dirtpeckers for the 4th time might just be what drives this program to greatness or at least I hope so.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

206-178=28...63-17=46...so in all that time their point

Dec 19, 2012, 10:24 AM

differential still doesn't surpass that one game...smh, LOL, lamo, rotf

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes. If you were sakerlina.

Dec 19, 2012, 10:26 AM

Awesome for Clemson.

The definition of awesome!

I'm a coot and have always said the 29-7 game the next year

Dec 19, 2012, 10:37 AM

was a worse beatdown. The fight and the stupid things the players did in reaction was even worse. That period of time was probably the lowest scar has been in the last 10-12 years.

Spurrier had to come in a clean up Holtz' mess. Look at the number of players SOS had to throw off that team and there several very good players.
