I appreciate what he's done for Clemson Academically but I hope that a new president will place at least a little more focus on our athletics programs.

It's first and foremost a University, and a #### good one. I agree with you...there's enough attention on the Athletic Department. What I would like tho is to spread that attention to the other programs as well.

presidents in this country that place anywhere near as much as emphasis on athletics as Jim Barker. As a former Tiger letterman, Barker both loves Clemson sports and gets the reality of college athletics - the good, bad and the ugly. He was much better prepared to deal with athletic issues than some egghead in over his or her head (Holden Thorp at UNCheat or Donna Shalala at Miami).

I knew President Barker fairly well as I was at Clemson for over 10 years. I recall talking with him one day about athletics and stating that Clemson is first an academic institute (I am bias, I work within academia) and then a athletic venue. He immediately corrected me and told me that his goal was to be the best at both, and neither proceeds the other.
For anyone believing he undervalued athletics, that is completely inaccurate.

Barker has been a great president IMO. Not without his weaknesses and controversies, but all in all he has been a fantastic leader and ambassador for Clemson. He is one of the greats. I wish him the very best.

Sad news... Great President

Never understood how reviled he was on here. I thought he placed a ton of emphasis on athletics, especially on facilities, strengthening the ACC, and on winning. He also loved Clemson.

We probably not find as good a person to replace him and then the Barker haters on here will realize what we had.

I think it was the whole taxing the athletic department thing, plus he's the one who made TDP fly home from New York to give Tommy Bowden a contract extension 6 to 8 months before he was fired.
All in all, he was a very good president, but he had his faults like any other person.

Being a professor--and possibly not even a fulltime professor at that--is surely less stressful than being the President. I wonder if he thought he'd be able to bounce back after the surgery, but that was before it became a quintuple bypass. Maybe he's thinking it's time to smell the roses.
I hope they can find someone just as enthusiastic and assertive as he is. His love for Clemson really shone through in everything he did (as opposed to a couple other recent Presidents). IMO he is right up there with Edwards and Prince.

Tommy Bowden was a huge upgrade over Tommy West. Jim Barker was nowhere near as mediocre as Tommy Bowden though.

His wife once told me something very flattering
Apr 16, 2013, 11:28 AM
|

I told her when I was in college that I remembered President Barker being around the architecture department when my brother was at Clemson, and that he was a good Clemson Man. (note at the time rumors were swirling he might retire then) I told her Id hate to see him retire, she then said "when he retires that leaves room for you to be the next president". All knowing that that was an off the cuff remark, born and raised a tiger it was flattering. But what she truly meant is the torch must be passed on from generation to another. Trustees note if you hire someone outside of the Clemson Family All He** will break loose. Find a good Clemson Man or Lady to be the next President!

Vote for ClemsonTiger06 for your 15th President...
Apr 16, 2013, 11:34 AM
|
|
As a Clemson grad, I have a few ideas up my sleeve:
1. More frisbee throwing on Bowman Field and less nerds fighting with foam weaponry.
2. Stop trading going to games for studying and no more exams during football, basketball, or baseball games.
3. Purple is no longer a color at Clemson. Orange and White only.
4. South Carolina's marching band will be dispersed throughout the upper deck at Death Valley.
5. If you "woo-hoo" at any point in time, you automatically have to wash dishes at Harcombe or Shiletter Dining halls.
6. No classes between 1pm on Friday and 11am Monday mornings during football season.
7. The new board of trustees includes everyone from the "cheap seats" at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
8. All away games can be viewed on the jumbo tron at Death Valley. Popcorn will be provided by the university. Bring your own chair and beverages.
9. Wednesdays are reserved for cookouts and cornhole from 11am-2pm
10. Cookie Break is every night. Unlimited cookies and milk.
11. Do your best. Have fun. Win in sports.
Vote for me!

purple gives me great pause. Anyway, you're too young. We need someone who is a little more mature, and since I am currently unemployed that is why I am taking this opportunity today to announce my candidacy. It's BudMan, Class of '71, for the 15th president of Clemson University! I will work hard to give the fans what they really want - a CHICKEN in every pot! Vote BudMan! He's the MAN!
