Tougher for ACC and Big East to Schedule Out of Conference

Jul 10, 2012, 7:44 PM

games? The PAC-12 and Big 10 have an out of conference scheduling deal and I can see the Big 12 and SEC doing the same. Won't that hurt the ACC and Big East's abilities to schedule quality non-conference opponents hurting their teams strength of schedules in the same way Boise State has a tough time scheduling out of conference at times? This could be a blessing or a curse depending how you look at it.

Depends on who you are.
I do not see teams like Clemson and FSU having problems, unless someone backs out at the last minute.
VT seems to have no problem.

you need to ck VT's OOC games

Jul 10, 2012, 9:54 PM

they don't ever play any Big 5 conference teams... or they do VERY rarely.

Re: you need to ck VT's OOC games

Not sure man. Since being in the ACC, VT has played the following programs:

2004 - #1 Southern Cal and #6 West Virginia, FLA A&M and Western Michigan
2005 - #15 Louisville, WVU, Ohio and Marshall
2006 - Northeastern, Cincy, Southern Miss, Kent State
2007 - #2 LSU, ECU, Ohio, William and Mary
2008 - Nebraska, East Carolina, Western Kentucky and Furman
2009 - #5 Alabama, #19 Nebraska, East Carolina, Marshall
2010 - #3 Boise St., James Madison, East Carolina, Central Michigan
2011 - (scheduling worked out in their favor here) App State, Ark State, Marshall, East Carolina

There are only about 1 out of every 3 years where VT doesn't play ELITE competition out of conference. Look at 2004, 2007 and 2009. That's TOUGH for out of conference games.

I would say that qualifies as tough OOC teams.

I did not say every game must be top 25 teams.

The answer is "YES".

Now that Strength Of Schedule will be a factor in determining the 4 playoff participants, you know that the SEC and the Big 12 will copy the Big 10 and Pac 10 regarding scheduling. It's to their advantage to shut out the ACC and the Big East from playoff possibilities. We need them. They don't need us. That's why we need to pull for our conference members, even if it means holding our noses.

Problems with your post:

Jul 10, 2012, 10:52 PM

#1) You are concerning yourself with an arrangement between the Big 12 and the SEC that does not exist.
#2) You are concerning yourself over an arrangement between the Big 10 and the Pac 12 that may never come to be. (http://espn.go.com/blog/bigten/post/_/id/52221/pac-12-teams-balking-at-b1g-alliance)
#3) You all think the rest of the conferences want to destroy the ACC as if they are in their mountain hideaways twirling their mustaches and petting their hairless cats.
#4) If the SEC is aligned in the regular season with anyone, it is with the ACC. Three premier games already are set in stone between Clemson and South Carolina, GT and UGA and FSU and Florida.

he said he could see the SEC/Big12 doing the same...that doesn't mean it's in place..that means he could see it happening in the future

The ACC's new 9 game conference schedule....

Jul 11, 2012, 8:11 AM

will impact those abilities just as much IMO.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

That too and the other conferences going to 9 conference

Jul 11, 2012, 8:29 AM

games. I know there is no liking of the ACC doing that. But, all the conferences will move to that. That's going to further hurt our Strength Of Schedule.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't see the SEC moving to it...their members aren't for

Jul 16, 2016, 12:30 PM

it because it hurts their chances to get to the 4 team playoff.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

we've hurt ourselves with the 9 game conf schedule

Jul 11, 2012, 8:43 AM

more than anything but yes...that is going to hurt.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I say, let them go ahead with a "challenge" type

Jul 11, 2012, 8:55 AM

schedule like the ACC/Big Ten basketball deal where they pit the top teams against each other. This would give half of the contenders from those conferences a guaranteed loss before they even begin to play the better teams from their own conference which will produce a second loss for some teams. Then the conferences with championship games will see another top team get a loss. That adds up to a lot of "elimination" games as far as the playoff picture goes.

The only problem I see, is teams might be afraid to schedule us. Dabo is building a monster program. Other teams want to boost SOS, but they don't want to get knocked out of the NC playoff.
