So, according to the article, Herman wasn't smart enough to realize that Spurrier leaving mid season was an indication of systemic problems? and USC is admitting they were interested in hiring someone that dumb?

I suppose Herman never considered using USCs interest primarily as leverage in negotiating a better deal with Houston.

Based on who they said they were interested in, look who all turned them down.

I believe, were I Houston, I would have called his bluff and offered no new contract. If he were smart he would have stayed without a new contract.
