WR Statistics 2016 vs. 2017

Jan 15, 2018, 10:43 AM

I am unsure why everyone is shocked that the wide receivers leaving. Ray Ray had basically an identical year in 2017 as he did in 2016. Deon Cain actually had a better year in 2016 than he did in 2017. The mind blowing difference is that they were back ups in 2016 and featured Wide Recievers in 2017. Why would they come back for similar results in 2018? If I were them, I wouldn't bank on a freshman QB coming in and killing it. This is exactly the reason they left. I think Ray Ray is better than Artavis Scott, and Scott broke Clemson records with Deshaun at the helm.

Year Receptions Yards TD's
Ray Ray 2016 49 472 2
2017 49 503 1

Deon Cain 2016 38 724 9
2017 58 734 6

Renfrow 2016 44 495 6
2017 60 602 3

You may be right on numbers but A. Scott was heads and shoulders above Ray Ray and that's not degrading Ray Ray. He was more dependable in every aspect in my opinion.

RRIII & AScott had 125 receptions in 2016...

Jan 15, 2018, 11:01 AM

RRIII & ARodgers had 68 in 2017. That includes jet sweeps and a lot of screens, which are both extensions of the run game.

The offense changed dramatically to suit our QB. Cain was adept in the screen game with DW4 at the helm, the inside tunnel that broke open Clemson's offense against Alabama an example.

The OCs tried that with KB2 and he missed way high too many times, creating tip balls. Tip balls equal interceptions too often so they appeared to scrap it.

I don't know why they left and don't want to throw my hat in on this as THE reason, just some other numbers to add...

They aren’t as self centered and focused on personal stats

Jan 15, 2018, 11:27 AM

They’re team players. The reason Ray Ray is leaving is another year or even 3 years isn’t going to improve his draft position, and catching 100 passes in 2018 wouldn’t move him up the draft board. Ray Ray knows he’s not getting any taller or faster and why not go and make 500,000 as a reserve or special teams player? He’s going to more money than 99.99% of all the other Clemson graduates this year. Ray Ray knows he’s never going to get the big franchise NFL contract so he needs to play as long as he can and the average career of an NFL player is 4 years. A college WR draft position has very little to do with his college stats, it’s driven by physical tools and potential.
