The picked up flag was the proper call because

Jan 4, 2015, 8:08 PM

There was only minimal contact by both players and the defender did not change the direction of the receiver. He has the right to his space and the ball hit him in the back. The reciever can't decide to go through him and then expect pass interference. Picking up the flag was correct.

Are you kidding me? There have been 3 refs

Jan 4, 2015, 8:10 PM

who have said that was a bad call. You're the only person I have seen say that?

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

so? Now u have heard someone who agrees with the no call***

Actually he isn't the only one. The refs in the Dallas game also said that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You should be watching Tom Jackson on ESPN now

Jan 4, 2015, 8:13 PM

he says not only was there PI, there was also a unsportsmanlike conduct on Dez Bryant for being out on the field without his helmet arguing.

No worries, Jerry's Boys will get their just punishment next week in the snow of Green Bay. It's supposed to be highs in the 30's here in SC next Sunday, so I know it'll be unbearable in Wisconsin.

High of 19º, low of 4º. I hate the Packers as much as the Cowboys, so I think I'd rather a giant sinkhole swallow the stadium.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah we all know the announcers know what they are

Jan 4, 2015, 10:15 PM [ in reply to You should be watching Tom Jackson on ESPN now ]

talking about. I mean Ed Cunningham and Jesse Palmer have proven that to be true. By the way I could list more I just do not think there is enough space for me to do so

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He was looking at the WR, not going after the ball and hit/

Jan 4, 2015, 8:14 PM

pulled the WR before the ball got there... That is PI all day, every day. Had he been turned around and making a play on the ball, then diffent story.. Until then..

/ thread. End of story.

Re: He was looking at the WR, not going after the ball and hit/

Jan 4, 2015, 8:15 PM

He does not have to play the ball to have a right to his space.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

in the NFL, yes you do.

Jan 4, 2015, 8:17 PM

in college football, you can faceguard.

There is no face guarding in the NFL.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: in the NFL, yes you do.

Jan 4, 2015, 10:11 PM

Yup, and even if there was he couldn't turn his head with the receiver grabbing his face mask.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But to hit/pull/grab/etc at a WR before the ball

Jan 4, 2015, 8:19 PM [ in reply to Re: He was looking at the WR, not going after the ball and hit/ ]

arrives, you have to be making a play on the ball directly and, hence the name, not interfering the WR.

I don't have a dog in this fight... I'm not a Cowboys fan, Lions fan, or fan of any NFL team, but that was PI. Dallas got away with one, good for them. I'm sure my old man is happy because he's a huge Dallas homer.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Simplyputtiger, that was PI all day

Jan 4, 2015, 8:49 PM [ in reply to Re: He was looking at the WR, not going after the ball and hit/ ]

The fact the refs changed the call for whatever reason, and Bryant came onto field arguing with no call, prove that there was something out of place... National TV audience saw inept refs trying to change the direction of a game with no hint of integrity.

The end

Jan 4, 2015, 8:30 PM [ in reply to He was looking at the WR, not going after the ball and hit/ ]

of the story occurred when they picked up the flag.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

;)

Jan 4, 2015, 8:30 PM

Ya got me there!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: ;)

Jan 4, 2015, 8:34 PM

But every real fan should hate to see a call like that in a playoff game.

Re: He was looking at the WR, not going after the ball and hit/

Jan 4, 2015, 9:59 PM [ in reply to He was looking at the WR, not going after the ball and hit/ ]

The receiver also grabbed a handful of face mask and pulled the defender into him before "attempting" to make the catch.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Indeed he did

Jan 4, 2015, 10:39 PM

And had that been the call then there'd be no argument otherwise.

But it wasn't.

The call was made and then picked up after an opposing player ran onto the field from the bench and yelled at the ref.

You just can't set that precedent.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

point is, there was no contact

Jan 4, 2015, 8:18 PM

facegaurding is only illegal when you make contact and you're not playing the ball.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: point is, there was no contact

Jan 4, 2015, 8:34 PM

No contact.... are you blind, and just listening to the game, that's the only excuse for someone saying there was no contact

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: point is, there was no contact

Jan 4, 2015, 10:12 PM

Most of the contact was initiated by the receiver. If you watch all the way through you will see the receiver grab the facemask and the the defender.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

3 Problems with this play

Jan 4, 2015, 10:38 PM

1) That play is called PI 99% of the time in the NFL. We all watch tons of football and have seen underthrown balls where the receiver comes back through the defender who isn't playing the ball called PI a million times. And that's even disregarding the fact that there was contact byt he defender's hand on the chest/arm of the receiver.

But, even granting it was a close call (which, honestly in real time it was)...

2) You positively cannot announce the penalty and then reverse it. That's reeks of incompetence by the officiating staff

But, even granting that it was a simple error by the refs....

3) You 100% cannot, under any circumstances, ever, reverse an already called penalty a few moments after a player runs onto the field from the bench to argue the call without his helmet on.

At least you can't do #2 or #3 without looking idiotic at best or less than fair at worst.
