My first job after graduation was at a facility in Georgia. The guys in this office were known for their practical jokes. One day in the dead of winter, they decided to sew together one of the sleeves of my winter coat that I had left on the coat rack in the office. Luckily after lunch when nobody was in the office, I found what they had done. I resisted the temptation to call them all out as a bunch of morons, remembering my behavioral psychology class that taught "behaviors that are reinforced will continue". I replaced the coat as I found it. At the end of the work day they were all gathered in the office ready for a big laugh as I struggled to put on my coat. Several times I went into the office as if I was ready to leave and then pretended that I had forgotten to do something before leaving. I made these suckers wait 20 minutes past quitting time to spring their great prank. I then walked into the office, threw my coat over my shoulder, and casually walked out. I could read the disappointment on their faces. They never pranked me again. So what is the point of this story? Responding to negative comments about our great Clemson Tigers by sports analysts only keeps these comments alive and that is the payoff that they are seeking. Instead, resist the temptation to respond and make them irrelevant by ignoring them.
