I don't know why you jump on Prodigal with this stuff
Feb 9, 2017, 9:29 AM
|
|
Prodigal to Trump/Obama is like a Dad to a 12/6 year old.
Sure, they are both doing the same thing, Prodigal was hoping that Trump knew better.
Sure, it's completely misplaced hope, because Trump is the right wing version of all of Obama's personality flaws except amped up on steroids.

I'm not picking specifically on Prodigal
Feb 9, 2017, 9:35 AM
|
|
it is the notion that Trump's actions are destroying the fabric of our society - like the big deal that was made about not accepting the result of the elections.
Trump was elected because we do not trust the institutions of our country. Trump plays that like Dabo plays the disrespect card.
The ship's done sailed on that one. Hopefully, as Prodigal hopes, we'll get back some semblance of integrity in our institutions.

as Trump is POTUS unless he gets mental health treatment. I think his tantrums are less political theater than they are genuine reactions to the idea that anyone would question his authority or policies.
To be fair, there is little to no chance of faith being restored in those institutions no matter who is president.

I do think his responses to criticism
Feb 9, 2017, 9:55 AM
|

seem to be impulsive and instinctive, not calculated and political.
We are all going to be criticized, our entire lives. Some criticism can be useful. Most criticism is intended to tear down. We've got to accept the former, and ignore the latter. President Trump has been doing neither, so far. It's not easy, though. I think he will eventually start to do so, if only by necessity. He's got to maintain some good will with folks, or he has little chance of success.

There will be a difference of opinion on this thought, certainly: for years conservatives have felt like their leadership have simply folded under pressure and not fought back. Because of this, Trump was a breath of fresh air. He fought back and won. Who in the heck could win with everything that was against him? Even the legitimate criticism.
However, there is certainly a problem (mental illness or whatever) with the fact that he can let nothing go. He has to respond to everything thrown at him. That is indeed troubling.

I don't think it wil diminish a fight later. I don't think a fight over Gorsuch is worth the bad PR. Dems aren't in a real good place right now. But I get what you're saying.

The reason is...

if the Democrats decide to filibuster Gorsuch, then the Republicans will probably follow their precedent and eliminate the filibuster. That would mean that they'd have little ability to prevent many other appointments at this early stage. And Gorsuch, precisely because he holds a "conservative" judicial philosophy (originalism), might be seen as less dangerous to Democrats than some other possible picks.

I agree with the strategy that the dems should wait and push back if/when Trump has the opportunity for the next Supreme Court Judge. They are still in a regrouping stage and to waste the political leverage they have from the Garland fiasco would be a mistake. They can't even stop obviously horrible choices like Sessions and DeVos, so they stand no chance of stopping a reasonable candidate like Gorsuch.
But the dem base wants them to fight so I could easily see them putting forth a half-hearted attempt that does nothing and wastes any and all political leverage they might have had.

Your comment about Sessions aside...

Their problem is that they're probably going to be in a much larger minority in two years. The Senate seats coming up are all in states that Trump won, with the exception of Nevada, and Heller is way out in front in that race so far. So while I agree that Gorsuch is a good pick that shouldn't be too controversial, the Democratic leadership may be looking at this as the last time they'll have the numbers to force drastic measures by Republicans. On the other hand, because Gorsuch seems to have a genuinely originalist judicial philosophy, they may look at this pick as not all that dangerous to them, and in fact a possible check on executive power. So maybe they'll try to avoid pushing Republicans to take the nuclear option, which would result in far less ability to check Trump at this early stage in his presidency.

Granted, many of those bars were set pretty low, but from what I've seen, I don't see a problem with Gorsuch.
I mean... I kinda get why the Dems would fight it given the GOP snowflakery last year. But like you said, it's probably wise to let it ride.
