So, those of you voting democratic.....

Sep 4, 2018, 5:11 PM

I asked before, but still waiting. Why?

1 - I hate Trump
2 - I like democratic policies

If 1. OK I get it. If 2 please explain what policies you like.

election you’re talking about. Will definitely vote Democratic in Florida Governors race. Florida Senate race undecided.

I vote middle of the road

Sep 4, 2018, 6:49 PM

And tend to support whoever is closest to the middle of the road. Sometimes they are to the right. Sometimes they are to the left. More fiscally conservative but slightly liberal socially/culturally. In years past, groups like me were called 'Rockefeller Republicans', but most are now RINOs or even Dems.

Caveat that if anybody is an obvious idiot, blowhard, or would cause chaos ... then there is a lesser chance I'd vote for them.

I also like the Executive and Legislative branches to be controlled by different parties. While it increases conflicts, it does help make sure things don't sway too far in either direction.

I vote middle of the road too.

I vote for Democrats and Republicans, both.

Sep 5, 2018, 8:57 AM

For me, it's a question of qualifications, priorities, and ability to work across the aisle. Is there a Democrat you're wondering about, specifically?

I'll likely vote for Stacey Abrams (D) in Georgia's gubernatorial election this year. Her policy position on higher education is one reason that I prefer her over Brian Kemp. The other is that he was a failure as Secretary of State, especially with regard to elections oversight.

Recent federal-level Republicans who I've supported include Johnny Isakson and Marco Rubio (in the Republican primary against Trump).

Does that help?

I respect your opinion on Abrams. I really don't know much

Sep 5, 2018, 9:16 AM

about local/state race and although I didn't state it I was referring to congressional contests. Anything that boosts education I am for.

My question was to understand why folks want to vote democratic and the policies/platform they support.

At the federal level,

Sep 5, 2018, 11:46 AM

I don't really have much to offer. I think the National Democratic Party is too busy catering to special interests to be effective. Here are some problems, below:

First, the federal minimum wage sits at $7.25/hr, and hasn't moved in about a decade. The party wants to raise it to $15/hr for lots of good reasons supported by lots of special interests, but without a lot of general public support due to the obvious negative impacts on many businesses. If the platform suggested a more moderate increase, to say, $8.25/hr, I think that they would find overall support and be able to act on it. Instead, all we get is a lot of talk and no action.

Further, investments in science, research, education, and technology are a great platform position for the national party. Broadband access in rural areas is a huge issue, where support by Democrats could win some points in red-states. But Democrats are so sequestered in urban areas there's little attempt to reach out to rural America, even when the platform should appeal there.

Finally, on the issue of tariffs... those are central to liberal ideals, when it comes to protecting workers and American industry. When DJT announced his aggressive tariff policies, Democrats should have been standing up APPLAUDING this, and reinforcing the idea to Americans that this is something that they support. Instead, blind hatred for Trump, means that POTUS has been able to co-opt this important policy position for Democrats. (On the other hand, blind worship of Trumpers means that they're turning liberal, and don't even know it... idiots.)

There's a part of me that thinks that Democrats are sitting on their hands, waiting for the Trump train's inevitable derailment. I think there's a lot of truth in that. But in a time where so many people are looking for a level-headed alternative, I think the Democrats are missing a once-in-a-generation opportunity to lead.
