Serious Orange Bowl Game Question

Jan 5, 2014, 9:55 PM

Serious question -

Why didn't Ohio State use their last two timeouts within the final minute of the game? It seems like they would probably have had time for at least one play. It seems like Urban Myer just threw in the towel when we intercepted their last pass.

I wondered the same thing. Thought that was strange.

I thought it was good sportsmanship. BUT maybe not.

I thought there was still enough time on the clock to force a punt and maybe run a play.

Agree. Seemed like Miller was either injured or totally out of sorts too. Surprised they didn't consider another avenue at that point.

ESPN made an error w/ the graphic, OSU only had 1 timeout

Jan 5, 2014, 10:06 PM

If you go back and watch the film they use 2 timeouts prior, ESPN just forgot to update the graphic on screen. That's why.

That explains it - with only one timeout left they.......

could have never forced us to turnover the ball to them before the clock ran out.

Yep.

They used one on our next to last possession (right before Tajh's int).

Then they used one after our first down play of our last possession.

Then when we got the first on that second down play, they stopped calling them because it was purely academic at that point

Yep an ESPN boner, they didn't have the TO's

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Here was my analysis of that in replaying the last...

Jan 5, 2014, 10:50 PM

...minute.

You could clearly hear the official saying that OSU was declining using a timeout in lieu of the "10-second runoff rule" for the last 60 seconds of the game.

That rule says that if a defense has a player down or a penalty, then there will be a 10 second runoff and a timeout assessed.

There was 29 seconds left after the 1st down. If the 10 seconds had been runoff, then we were at 19 seconds. Clemson would run another 5-6 seconds off on the 2nd down,. Now we're at 13 seconds, with an OSU timeout (they now have 1 TO remaining) plus Clemson on 3rd down. Clemson runs 3rd down and another 6 seconds. We're down to 7 seconds and 4th down. OSU uses their final TO. Clemson punts on 4th down and runs the clock to 2 seconds.

OSU could have a hail Mary.

I guess Meyer just thought it was over and what was the point, although stranger things have happened for Auburn this year, so why now try it??

They didn't have 2 TO's at that point

Jan 5, 2014, 10:59 PM

THey only had 1 after our first down play on our last possession.
