Great game last night, but Ryan Day really...

needs to work on his interview skills. At halftime he was understandably rattled, but had trouble answering the questions, very deer in headlight. After the game he made excuses, gave no credit to the opponent, and set a poor example for his players and fans. Win with class, lose with class. I was a disappointed in him.

He didn’t slug our player and refuse to shake hands with our coach after the game. I guess we gotta temper our expectations and be happy with incremental improvement when playing these guys.

did he not shake hands with dabo after the game ? I definitely thought he was acting a little too cool for school with dabo on the pregame coach's meeting on the field during warmups ?

From his postgame press conference, Ryan Day said:
“Clemson, give them credit. They have a really good team, and are the defending national champs. They do a great job.”
He also referred to Clemson as “a great team” in another part of his press conference.
Here is a link for you to his postgame comments, from the top story on this very site:
https://www.tigernet.com/story/Ohio-St-head-coach-disappointed-in-calls-in-the-loss-and-for-his-players-18455
For someone who claims to be all about truth and facts, you are either completely ignoring them in this situation, or were too lazy to research them.
Sorry, but you aren’t getting off the hook on this due to all of the grief you give me regularly.
I agree that he came across a whiny jerk, but he did give us credit.

Your link was to the post game press conference, not the halftime interview, or post game interview. His comments in the post game press conference, which were quoted in the article, were being read off of a sheet of paper. My comments were in reference to his interviews, which were made in the heat of the moment, without the benefit of a ######. I stand by my statement that Ryan Day needs to work on his interview skills.

I figured you would want to know that your statement that Day didn’t give Clemson credit was incorrect.
It might seem like nit-picking, because it is. You and your pals here have created such an environment.
I agree with your general premise that Day didn’t come across well in general.

Post game, he was articulating the mood in the locker room. The word "angry" reflected the mood of his players. I would have been angry too if I was in the OSU locker room because I had so many opportunities to win the game and I did not.

I have to defend Francis Marion. The interview that I saw at the end of the game was exactly as he said. He never mentioned a word giving Clemson any credit. He just whined about the calls. Perhaps he thought better of it and did another interview. I hope that is the case as the first one was not a good look at all.

Frances’s post stated that Day didn’t give Clemson credit.
Dec 29, 2019, 10:53 AM
[ in reply to Re: You are incorrect (hard for you to believe, I know). ] |
|
It didn’t say that he was only referring to his comments on the field immediately following the game, and not the postgame press conference which followed shortly thereafter.
The fact that Day was reading a prepared statement doesn’t take away from the fact that he gave Clemson credit. If anything, the postgame press conference comments should hold more weight because he had a chance to reflect on his thoughts a bit more and let the emotions of a tough game die down some.
Make no mistake, Day seems like a whiny jerk. Honestly though, if we were in their shoes, it would be a very tough pill to swallow after such a hard fought game.

Reading a statement and being interviewed are two entirely separate skills. Speaking without prepared notes Day did not perform well. When given time to prepare a short speech his comments were more thought out. The OP was correct in his observation that Day struggled with his “off the cuff” comments.

A press conference is an interview.
Dec 29, 2019, 8:28 PM
|
|
Besides, people do interviews with memorized answers all the time. Sometimes they memorize their answers, and other times they read a prepared statement.
If you or others want to assume that their coach didn’t want to give Clemson credit, but that he did only because someone else forced him to by preparing a statement for him, then that’s certainly your right. I don’t agree with it though.
He said that we are a great team, and I am taking him at his word. I am choosing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt, because I don’t know him personally, and I don’t think it’s worth harboring energy resenting the guy.

It doesn’t help that he looks like a pud, but I didn’t hear anything that could be offensive or even disrespectful.
Just my opinion, I think they got jobbed on the fumble/TD (when viewed in super slow-mo), but the targeting call was legit. Either way, if this game played out the opposite, I would be on my roof screaming “########!” and this place would be awash with conspiracy theories.
Basically, he deserved to be pissed and he handled the press’ questions relatively fine for a football coach who is kind of a stump.

I actually prefer Urban to these stooges - Day is a smug jerk who was handed the keys to a Ferrari and just needs to keep it from running off the road.

FM, I agree completely. When we have lost a game, Dabo has always first given credit to the opponent. I know it's been a while, but I remember Syracuse getting praise heaped upon them by CDS. All I know about Day is he is angry. SMH.
