I was in my grandad’s bag!
(I think. That’s a lot of numbers to crunch in my condition. But I feel slightly confident.)

He was at Clemson when that song came out. Always loved his idea of beach music versus what everyone else calls beach music. Dad used to shag on the old Pawley's Pavillion (burned in a fire I think he said), before The Pad became THE place for shagging.
And yes, I'm old. And yes, by all means queue up the shagging jokes.

My uncle and aunt were teenagers. Uncle Mickey was in a band which played top rock hits. I remember listening to his band and my aunt's radio. I thought Rock and Roll was the shizts.

November 1963. One of my most vivid memories as a kid. I was 6 years old, and watching the JFK funeral on TV as my mom ironed clothes. In the den of that little house in the Welcome community. The horses are pulling the casket... JFK Jr does his little salute, etc. Tears are running down my mom's face as she irons. She is using a Coke bottle to sprinkle water on the clothes, I guess we didn't have a steam iron. I can play that scene in my mind as clearly as clicking on a youtube video...

14 and in 9th grade at Evans Jr. High in Spartanburg. I could still hit those high notes then:"woo woo woo woo woo, woo-oo-woo-oo woo,oh ho wo oh, woo hoo woo-hoo woo" etc.
Origin of the Woo Hoo?
