Do we ever practice in-bounds plays?
Our team always looks completely lost on our in-bounds plays. Usually the only way we can get the ball in from under our own basket is to throw it 3/4 of the court to a guard standing under the other basket.

In the Duke game, wasn't it? If not, I'll give you 2 of 29 games. Not exactly chronic as it seemed to be for three years with Grantham inbounding

The “we don’t inbound the ball well” talking point
Mar 2, 2018, 9:00 PM
|

is blown way out of proportion by the whiners and complainers, much like the “opposing team always has a guy have a career night against us” line.
I don’t know where these stupid generalizations originate, or why they get repeated ad nauseum, but you and I both know they are ridiculous.

I think you missed a few games Striper. I realize the first FSU game was the game where we got a 5 second call that cost us, but we routinely have trouble getting the ball in play and most of the time we have to throw it over half court from under our own basket. This last FSU game we routinely did this.
On the other hand, I remember both GT and FSU in this most recent game burning our defense for easy baskets on in-bounds plays on the end line.

22-7

We're 22-7. But anyway, here's the answer.
FSU has a couple of athletic guys who are over 7 feet tall ... one is 7'4"!! ... who can sort of change the plan on how you inbound the ball under the basket.
And Duke (an extremely long and athletic team) took advantage of our main ball handler being injured.
But, still ... 22-7

That's not an issue getting the ball inbounds
Mar 2, 2018, 9:19 AM
[ in reply to Re: Seeing as we've only had one game this year ] |

because the ball gets inbounded. It's by design. An issue getting the ball inbounds is when you turn it over, or have to call a timeout. That's happened in one game.

I understand your point so I will attempt to rephrase the question.
Why don't we ever seem to run inbounds plays that put us in an immediate offensive position? A great example would be the back cuts we saw GT and FSU run in the last 2 games. Another example would be a quick double-screen for a guard to get off an immediate open shot.
Our in-bounds plays seem to require us to set up our offense all over again from beyond the half court line.

Those successful plays by opponents were as much

defensive breakdowns by us as anything. Against FSU they were by design. The guys guarding the inbounder had enormous wingspans. Same reason they blocked so many shots. We're going up against 7 footers with 6'3 guards in the paint

True story....sorta
Mar 2, 2018, 9:34 AM
|
|
I asked Brad Brownell that very question the other day...I said, "Brad Brownell, do you even practice inbounds plays?"
He was like, "Whaaaaaa? We can practice inbounds plays?"
When I said yes, he ran out of the interview room, cutting the interview short. Presumably to practice inbounds plays. Seems as if practicing an inbounds play had never occurred to him. I don't get it.
