BCS over-simplified

Dec 4, 2013, 10:36 AM

Total of 10 spots to fill (2 in Nat Championship game, 8 in BCS bowls), no conference can send more than two teams, must be ranked in top 14 to get an at-large bid.

The American conference (or whatever they call it) will send UCF. This leaves 9 spots to fill.

The SEC will send it's champion and Alabama, simple as that. This leaves 7 spots to fill. It also eliminates the loser of the SEC championship game, and USuC.

The Pac 12 will send the winner of it's championship game, and Oregon. This leaves 5 spots to fill.

Northern IL will earn a BCS bid with a win in it's conference championship game vs Bowling Green because they will be ranked ahead of UCF (auto qualifer). "Such team is ranked in the top 16 of the final BCS Standings and its ranking in the final BCS Standings is higher than that of a champion of a conference that has an annual automatic berth in one of the BCS bowls." This will leave 4 spots to fill.

The Big 12 is a bit more difficult. If Ok St beats OK Saturday and Baylor also wins, they will send both teams. If Ok St loses, the Big 12 will only send 1 team (winner of the Baylor/TX game, which will be the conference champion)...assuming with the loss, that OK St falls out of the 14. If you assume that even with a loss, Ok St stays in the top 14, then the Big 12 could still send 2. Odds are, Ok St wins the championship, Baylor gets the at-large, so this leaves 2 spots to fill.

The Big 10, which actually has more than 10 teams...stupid name. Either way, with a Michigan St win, Clemson will be eliminated from the BCS picture, as the Big 10 will send State as the champion and Oh St would be the at large choice over Clemson (yes, in every scenario, Oh St gets picked before Clemson for an at-large). If Oh St wins, they play for the national championship and Michigan St will be eliminated from a BCS spot.

The ACC...pretty obvious here...if FSU wins, they play for the national championship. If Duke wins, they play in the Orange Bowl and FSU gets the 2nd at-large, behind Bama.

What does all this mean, we need a few things to happen to get in. It's a must for FSU and Oh St to win. A loss by either ends Clemson's BCS dream. Obviously a few other things would benefit us...but the championship game, from what I see, has to be FSU and Oh St for Clemson to go to a BCS bowl.

Michigan State goes to the Rose Bowl win or lose:
if they win, they are the conf champ. Ohio State gets an at-large.
if they lose, Ohio State goes to BCS Champ, Rose picks Mich State as at-large (if they remain in top 14). Conference ties are strong. If they are not eligible, a Big 12 team goes (Baylor/Ok State).

Oregon does NOT go to a BCS game.

Basically there is one open BCS at-large spot with Bama being guaranteed and UCF and NIU also barring upset. That leaves us, and maybe another big 12 team for the orange bowl to pick from.

Yes...best case is, OK beats OK St and Baylor beats TX***

MSU would not fall below #14 and will be Rose Bowl bound if they lose to OSU.
