Other Commitments to Shock the College Gurus

Jun 25, 2012, 6:16 PM

Seeing how shocked everyone was when RN committed,
how are they going to react when Adams & Fuller also commit to the TIGERS?

If that happens - Bring on the SEC & BIG 12!!!

we aren’t playing flag football anymore!!!

No more of T. Bowdens smoke & mirrors,
it’s time to HIT somebody.
Help them up and HIT’em AGAIN

I’ve been craving a DEFENSE like that since the 89 Gator Bowl when Major Harris’ mother was on National TV begging WV to take him out of the game because they are going to kill my boy

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It was his fault for being slower than our linebackers.***

before you beat your chest, they better recruit some OL

Jun 25, 2012, 6:20 PM

who can block someone

Boyd like to have gotten killed in many games last year with a so-called veteran line,

this year, 4 new OLmen, it'll be a test for the OL coach

why isn't Dabo getting some of these top OLmen to Clemson to protect

you want to see someone building a team the right way, look at the NEW coach at Michigan

5 OLmen committted, I think 4 are 4*, one may be a 5*

thats how you start to build a TEAM that can run and throw

Re: before you beat your chest, they better recruit some OL

Jun 25, 2012, 6:26 PM

In fairness to our coaches, who are pretty well respected recruiters, there are not a whole lot of 4 & 5 star OL out there. I do think they are working on trying to build the offensive line. Next year we should have a pretty good OL with some depth !!

we've been hiding behind that excuse for years.

Jun 25, 2012, 7:09 PM

look at the post below. Michigan seemed to find some. The way we recruit skill there is no excuse for our OL recruiting issues

You're certainly free to have your opinion. If you feel that strongly about it then I would suggest that you contact Dabo and the rest of the coaching staff and tell them what they should do to alleviate this problem !!
Sorry for the run on sentence !!

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'd expect OL in particular would want to play in a pro-

style offense. We haven't been anywhere close to that for any real length of time in years - I suppose one could argue for the Napier years, but that's been pretty much it.

If we have more success moving forward in general, maybe we'll have more success recruiting top OL and can gradually move to more of a traditional system.

they better recruit some OL — AGREED, Point well taken

Jun 25, 2012, 6:27 PM [ in reply to before you beat your chest, they better recruit some OL ]

I’ve been saying that for years.

That is exactly why I was never for the hiring of Tommy Bowden.
And certainly not for the extensions and money that he got.

But at least we would be able to beat’em up on DEFENSE.
And practicing against a DEFENSE like that would only make the O-Line better.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I hope so, but with TB and it's not gotten a lot better

Jun 25, 2012, 6:33 PM

with Dabo, and they are trying with OL, but how many times does Dabo allow one's blocking one's in practice, NOT OFTEN, he's said as much

he has said they don't hit one's on one's because of possible injuries.

here is another site on Mich recruiting, this site has Mich with 4 - 4* and 1 - 5* OLmen

those northern teams seem to find them one way or the other

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

don't hit one's on one's because of possible injuries

Jun 25, 2012, 7:15 PM

There’s part of your problem.
And I’m not surprised

There’s a possibility of injury walking to class.
Stay average so you don’t get hurt.

Did anyone read what Jim Riggs said after he watched practice.
He basically said they pampered the kids compared to what his practices were like. They did not practice in shorts. Full pads, full contact all the time.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yo, dude we had 4 4star olineman this past recruiting cycle

Re: before you beat your chest, they better recruit some OL

Jun 25, 2012, 7:47 PM [ in reply to before you beat your chest, they better recruit some OL ]

look at where we are located. it is true that the s.e. has more speed, and the midwest has more big bodies that are not as fast of foot. look at the cornfields around here, they are dried and burnt-up. for summer conditioning our linemen should be running irrigation pipes, and i promise you, that ain't no fun and games. it's always been said that the wisconsins and nebraskas have them " big corn-fed young men", so i'm just trying to get our young linemen some good fresh home-grown corn to bulk'em up.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

the pass blocking was good other than the two game Price….

missed. It was the run blocking that was terrible.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

OLmen,

Jun 25, 2012, 6:27 PM

here is a look at Mich.

4 - 4* OLmen
1 - 2* Olmen

OLmen rankings are numbers 4, 7, 8, 8, 24 and NR

also

3 DLmen, 2 are 4* and 1 is a 3*

http://michigan.rivals.com/default.asp?SR=RivalsFP

Clemson should take notice and somehow find out what they are not doing and start doing it with OL recruiting

if they got 2 or 3 4* Olmen every year with the rest of the recuits they are getting, it would be lights outs on the field in a few years

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: OLmen,

Jun 25, 2012, 6:42 PM

Anyone know why we didn’t offer 5* — OL Tunsil

Didn’t even offer??????

What happened J. Leamon. I know he didn’t have the grades.
Is he attending JUCO with intent on re-joining Clemson?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: OLmen,

Jun 25, 2012, 6:46 PM

Tunsil I think would have been academically ineligible.

Leamon didn't qualify and went to SC state (I think).

The problem is, getting Oline in the Southeast is REALLY hard when you have teams like Alabama, LSU, Georgia, etc.

Clemson doesn't have a history of strong OL, so it isn't as appealing to recruits right now. The Chad and Caldwell will change that image but it will take time.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: OLmen, can Clemson keep Chad long enough

Jun 25, 2012, 6:57 PM

to see a change

I'm betting if Clemson wins big this year, especailly another div. title, and for sure if they win the ACC again,

Chad is gone for a HCing job somewhere

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You guys are all missing the point on the OL deal...

Jun 25, 2012, 6:47 PM

Clemson lost it's O-line mystique when we went to a "finesse" offense...period. Sure, we can tell D-linemen and receivers and skill players that we have a track record of putting those players in the NFL. We do not have a strong case for telling O-linemen we can put them in the NFL and watch them flourish in recent years. What players would we use as our examples?

Now..before I'm blasted I'm not saying you can't recruit good O-linemen to a spread/finesse offense. I do think it is much harder than recruiting to a pro-style offense. I believe we need to do a better job of developing the 2-3 star o-linemen like Boise State, Oregon, etc. We have not done a good job with that from a S&C standpoint or a technique standpoint. Just my opinion.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: You guys are all missing the point on the OL deal...

Jun 25, 2012, 6:55 PM

That's a very reasonable post. I think the reason Caldwell was hired was to help develop Offfensive Linemen. It won't show up overnight but I think we're working our way in that direction. Now as far as S&C is concerned I'm no expert on that and will leave the speculation on that to others !!

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: You guys are all missing the point on the OL deal...

Jun 25, 2012, 7:02 PM

3 linemen drafted recently out of Clemson , Austin , Richardson and Hairston , all still on NFL rosters at the end of 2011 . I know that isnt a lot , but it looks like we are getting a better list to show the OL recruits .

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Possibly...but compare those "Bowden era"...

Jun 25, 2012, 7:12 PM

Olinemen to the All-american list of the 1980s and since we went finesse it doesn't compare in my mind. Compare the late 70's Clemson OL standouts to what we've had in the Bowden/Swinney era (about the same number of years). I can think of a few names like Young, Richardson, and Bennett in the Bowden era.

BUT think back to the slobberknocking era and I think of names like Bostic, Stuckey, Nanney, Farr, Flesch, Long, and Reese. I am sure I am leaving a bunch out, but these guys were perrenial studs with several going pro and making noise on that level.

Face it guys...along the way with Hatfield, West and then Bowden and Swinney we got soft on the O-line. Coaches like the Fridge who told you this about Clemson knew what they were talkign about.

I do think Morris saw this as a glaring defeciency right off the bat. He has called our line out repeatedly since being here. The big part of fixing a problem is recognizing you have a problem. Morris gets it...I don't think Swinney and Bowden realized we had a problem.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Meant to say late 70s - 1980's....

Jun 25, 2012, 7:13 PM

essentially the Ford era.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Possibly...but compare those "Bowden era"...

Jun 25, 2012, 7:29 PM [ in reply to Possibly...but compare those "Bowden era"... ]

Not trying to be picky but I know Stuckey played defense and I'm pretty sure Reese did too. But I know what you're saying and yes I agree that we need to get a whole lot tougher than we are now !!

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I stand corrected on Stuckey but you are wrong about Reese..

Jun 25, 2012, 7:33 PM

Reese was an offensive guard and a dang good one too.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I stand corrected on Stuckey but you are wrong about Reese..

Jun 25, 2012, 7:39 PM

If you mean Archie Reese - you are wrong there too. He was a defensive tackle and played for the 49ers like Stuckey.

Nope not Archie...Steve Reese...look him up. if I am not ..

Jun 25, 2012, 7:49 PM [ in reply to Re: I stand corrected on Stuckey but you are wrong about Reese.. ]

mistaken he was a two-time all-american. I could have that flubbed up, but we ran behind him ALL year my sophmore year (1985) at Clemson. I remember being amazed at the push he got.

And to make up for my ONE error I will name TWO more multiple time All-Americans from the Ford era. I have to give credit to my brother on for one. He looked over my post and reminded me I missed:

Stacey Seegars (played under Hatfield and Ford but was a Ford recruit), and

Phillips - standout my junior and senior years. Another amazing lineman. I believe he was AA for two or three years!!?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Nope not Archie...Steve Reese...look him up. if I am not ..

Jun 25, 2012, 7:50 PM

Steve Reese was an O/G from Thomson, GA..

Last years recruiting class?

Jun 25, 2012, 7:13 PM [ in reply to Re: You guys are all missing the point on the OL deal... ]

Look at who we got last year. We brought in Battle, DeStefano, Guillermo, and Reader last year who look to get alot of experience quick. I think it was a good OL recruiting class for Clemson.

If we could get Droogsma that will help and I have faith in the other OL we already have commited since Coach Morris offered him. Crowder would be a huge help as well

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Robbie Caldwell is a hell of a OL coach.

Jun 25, 2012, 9:11 PM [ in reply to Re: You guys are all missing the point on the OL deal... ]

Have full faith he's gonna whip em into shape

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Even back in our late 70's/80's heyday, we put very few OL

Jun 25, 2012, 8:12 PM [ in reply to You guys are all missing the point on the OL deal... ]

in the NFL. The Bostic brothers were the exception. A few others had a cup of coffee, but you really have to come forward to guys like Corey Hulsey and Barry Richardson (Bowden recruit) to see a Clemson OL making a difference in the NFL.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The knock on the OL back then was PASS blocking

Jun 25, 2012, 8:31 PM

Running the option, they ALL could run block.

We didn’t have many problems punching the ball across the goal line or for a first down.
Ever read the stats on Tracy Johnson on 3rd or 4th down and short.
Almost guaranteed.

Then compare that with Bowden talking about how it is easier to score from the 10 yard line than it is on the 1 yard line.
Flag Football mentality
